2012 Walt Disney World theme park attendance announced

TEA has just released the 2012 numbers here is how Central Florida stacked up.

TEA numbers have been released! Highlights for Central Florida!
MK up 2.3% to 17.536 million
Epcot up 2.2% to 11.063 million
DAK up 2.2% to 9.998 million
DHs up 2.2% to 9.912 million
IOA up 4.0% to 7.981 million
USF up 2.5% to 6.195 million
SWO up 3.0% to 5.358 million
BGT up 1.5% to 4.348 million

    Full report here
    http://www.teaconnect.org/sites/defa...2012teaera.pdf

So what can we learn about this data?

What we can see is that overall Central Florida was up 2.2% year over year. And that Only IOA, SWO, USF and MK actually grew their share of business, while BGT's growth paced below the regional, so it lost it's share of business.

Congrats to IOA on another year of growth! It is currently the number 10 most visited park in the world! With more great stuff on the way it will be interesting to see how the Universal parks continue to grow against the Disney parks.

I'm amazed at the increases. Universal is making serious inroads into the market. Very exciting.

its especially shocking because of all the construction going on throughout the resort. you would think that would deter people from coming since besides the despicable me ride nothing new has really opened there.

It is reasonable to think at this pace IOA and USF could out perform DAK and DHS

Can't speak for the other parks, but I know these numbers are very much inflated for Disney's parks, especially Magic Kingdom. Something's rotten in Denmark.

Really? Do have different numbers? If so, where do they come from, and why not post them?

Re: 2012 Walt Disney World theme park attendance announced

Interesting numbers, particularly the 2009-2012 figures. Universal's increase over the last few years, given the general economy, is impressive. I was all ready to say that IOA would have a hard time catching even the most moribund of Disney's Orlando parks, but it would appear that USF got a nice boost from Potter World opening at IOA. Once Potter II opens, a similar symbiotic boost could put IOA into the #3 or 4 spot in Orlando attendance. I personally haven't been to Universal Orlando in quite a few years, but they are obviously doing a lot of things right!

Ugghh. Sorry that came off so snooty and falsely academic. Didn't mean it that way.

Those pre-and-post Potter numbers at IOA are very, very impressive. USF's percentage gains in the same time-frame out-pace every WDW theme park. Also telling is the fact that each of the Disney parks' attendance numbers were at or below 2009-levels before 2012 with the exception of DAK, the arguably weakest park. And yet prices at WDW have continued to go up across-the-board - admission, food, rooms, cheap-crap merchandise... I guess as long as they keep smokin' the pixie dust, everything will be just magical in TDO/TDA's world.

So, if IOA surpasses DHS and/or DAK in attendance, will Disney continue to pretend that there isn't a "battle" for guests in Orlando?

Re: 2012 Walt Disney World theme park attendance announced

I think it would be fun to look at Ticket Price increases from 2009 to 2012

    WDW Price Increase:
    2009 1 Day 1 Park: $75.00
    2012 1 Day 1 Park: $89.00
    Difference: $14.00
    % Change: 18%

    UO Price Increase:
    2009 1 Day 1 Park: $79.00
    2012 1 Day 1 Park: $89.00
    Difference: $10.00
    % Change: 12%

So the question is, do you believe that WDW has added 18% or Universal has added 12% in value since 2009.

Well for me, with the addition of the WWOHP, Nightly Fireworks, Daily Parade, Minion Mayhem, revamped SpiderMan (all by 2012) YES. It was worth the price increase!

I can't say I feel the same about WDW.

Re: 2012 Walt Disney World theme park attendance announced

I have to wonder if there's really any room for the Magic Kingdom to go. The numbers are so high that you have to think that nearly all the people that visit Orlando are going to The Magic Kingdom. In order to boost their numbers, they have to bring more people into town. Universal just has to peel off some of the people that come down for Disney to try something different. An easier task in my estimation. I'm not trying to defend Disney, and their other parks are clearly not maxing out (if Magic Kingdom is the max) but I have to wonder what the overall tourism numbers are and if it would even be possible for Disney to have as big an increase if essentially everyone is already going there.
It bothers me when people selectively edit quotes to support whatever point they are trying to prove.

Re: 2012 Walt Disney World theme park attendance announced

According to visitorlando.com, in 2009 Orlando had a total of 46,583,000 visitors. In 2011 (the last year of their statistics), there were 55,168,000 visitors, a total increase of 8,585,000 visitors over that time frame, or 18.4%. Obviously there are a whole lot of visitors floating around Orlando who are not visiting the theme parks. But if overall visitors have increased by 18% in that short time frame, doesn't Disney's relatively flat attendance look even worse? I.e., more people are coming to the area, but Disney isn't picking up many of them?
