Disney says My Magic Plus wrist bands increases guest spending

Electronic wristbands tested at Walt Disney Co. (DIS)ís Florida resort succeeded in boosting spending by guests, parks division Chairman Thomas Staggs said.
The bands serve as admission tickets, hotel room keys and credit cards. They were tested by 1,000 people at Walt Disney World in Florida, Staggs said in an interview at Allen & Co.ís annual conference in Sun Valley, Idaho, without offering details. Guests spent more on average in part because they had fun with the technology, he said.

Re: Disney says My Magic Plus wrist bands increases guest spending

They've increased spending by spending close to $2 Billion for something that will actually make guest's Disney experience worse... Fastpass+ will lead to overall longer lines, more hassle for guests (and CM's), and will exclude even more guests from the Fastpass program then the old program. Also, from what I've heard, the magic bands are not very comfortable especially in Florida weather. Having the guests inevitably take off the hot uncomfortable magic band will lead to more back up at Fastpass+ stations/ attraction entrances (as well as guests losing their bands). If the system leads to minor improvements in gusts spending but leads to guests satisfaction levels dropping, it is a failure.

Because it's fun tech??? I would think because it's harder to keep track of your spending... I dunno long as they put some of the money back into the parks this can be a good thing

Disney is putting more spin on this, than Guests can put on their Tea Cups in the Magic Kingdom!

    WDW's new catch phrase:

"Come visit spend your money in the happiest placepenitentiary on earth!"

Not really a surprise that they went with "magic wristbands" rather than "happy handcuffs"

heh fun with the technology.. like when you first saw an in-room refrigerator stocked with candy and drinks and pigged out having fun and then went "IT COST WHAT???", and then a few years later everyone knows not to use it.

I don't want to wear a wristband with mickey on it.. I don't want to tap said wristband on a mickey icon in order to pay for things, or in order to get into a park, or in order to get into a fastpass que for an attraction that doesn't need fastpass (seriously there is a faspass+ entrance for muppets). Do you know what I want? More attractions that make me say "wow." The last time Disney World did that was in 2006 with Everest.

Bingo. What Disney doesn't understand is how easy it will be for their customers' perception of "magic wristbands" to switch to "unhappy handcuffs" after they see the bill for all that "convenience," and start really giving some thought to what the "Disney Experience" is costing them.

Disney's customers are eventually going to realize that MyMagicThis and MyMagicThat doesn't give them any new rides or restaurants, it gives Disney a new way to squeeze more customers into the same rides & restaurants and suck more money from their wallets.

And it will be Disney itself, with their ever-rising prices and pushy marketing of MyMagicEverything, that makes their customers realize it.

But you don't HAVE to do the MyMagic+ wristband thing if you don't want to, right?
    My top favorite Disneyland attractions:

    1. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
    2. Pirates of the Caribbean
    3. Splash Mountain
    4. Mad Tea Party
    5. Peter Pan's Flight
    6. Roger Rabbit's Car Toon Spin

yes we are and eventually yes you will have to. regarding the OP, lol this is hardly a news flash Eric what did everyone expect. its like giving a kid their first credit card, only this one is new tap technology and comes with a little light show every time you make a purchase. people for the most part can be irresponsible by nature, when your not keeping track of your spending, particularily in a family unit with kids split up while shopping, it is VERY easy to add a hundred dollars + to your ledger at disney.
