Preview of Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Ride - Is This Disney's Best Effort?

I came across this photo of a preview of the upcoming Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Ride at WDW.

It looks really "flat" -- the characters look like plywood cut-outs and not POTC quality Animatronics. Is this by design? Are the Imagineers looking for that old "Mr. Toad's Wild Ride" nostalgia?

That's a computer generated image. The characters are flat in the computer model for simplicity sakes.

I don't think so -- this is supposed to be a "previsualization". I am sure that Disney could do 3-D animation via Pixar if it did not want that flat look.

to me it just looks like more of a really bad picture then a perception of what the ride is going to look like

Well, the Radiator Springs Racers preview video also looked like crap as well, but the actual ride ended up looking way better. So I wouldn't judge the ride based off of a preview video.

    That's a great point.

I don't expect the same money to go into building the coaster, but don't expect the video to be a great representation.

The video ride throughs are strictly for internal purposes within WDI, not for presentation. So why on earth would they spend massive heaps of money on pixar animators for making 3D models?

Why go through the effort of creating digital models? The ones for Pixar characters already exist. The Dwarfs were also never slated to be highly sophisticated figures.

It's quite obvious that this video is a very simplistic rendition of what the ride will be like. While I don't expect POTC levels of animatronics by any stretch, I am sure the figures will be actual 3-dimensional ones and not cutouts.

There's a huge amount of things in that video that aren't indicative of the actual ride. There's a ton of places where there isn't much texture to anything at all (the dwarf cottage outside isn't even textured at all, it's just a white monochrome model). The entire ride is going to have considerably greater detail than the video would indicate. It's very simple CGI all over.

yeah this is obviously a rough internal ridethrough, i don't really know why anyone would expect the figures in the ride to actually look like that.

that would cost way, way, way, way more than it would be worth in any respect.

Fully rendering something at Pixar quality takes a lot of money and time. These models need to be ready fast and able to quickly reflect changes. Especially since this is for internal use, there is no reason to inflate the budget with a pretty render.

Really, it's not possible to infer anything about the ride's look, feel, lighting, color balance, AA animation, use of space and overall experience from that picture.

    Don't read into it.
That looks like my old screensaver from Windows 98. A 2D image slapped in 3D space.
