Question Golden Girls at original MGM Studios

Aside front the Golden Girls house, wasn't there a show in the original park line-up where you got to play a part in a scene from the Golden Girls? I remember they used a scene from an actual episode and the chosen actor got to play a fireman. I cannot find anything about this online...

That was an attraction called Superstar Television which ran till September of 1998. American Idol Experience now occupies that theater.

Agreed. I don't know for sure if there was a Golden Girls segment in there. But that was the only show at the Studios since opening day that could have had a segment like that. I took part in SSTV once, playing Al Borland from Home Improvement (rather brilliantly, I must say!).

I vaguely remember a Golden Girls segment (I'm guessing it was set at the kitchen table). Who could forget the I Love Lucy chocolate conveyor belt scene? Classic.

I know they reconstructed the house the girls lived in on the backlot.

And it seemed like cheating. This isn't the BATES MOTEL that Hitchcock filmed in, like you see at the Universal Hollywood tram tour.

It was a copy of another house that appeared in the show prior to the creation of the studios park.

I seem to remember them omitting that fact on the Tour. In fact I only found out it was a facsimile recently. Still, it was great to see it as it was iconic at the time.

Maybe I drunk the koolaid and believed whatever lies they told me. But isn't the house on the backlot the actual house that they used for the exterior on the show, not a reconstruction?

^That's the version I was led to believe up until recently. I'd love to know which one is correct.

Perhaps after the studios opened, they shot some exteriors for the show.

But the show had been shooting in Hollywood for years before the studio park was even built.

Re: Golden Girls at original MGM Studios

From the episodes I've seen (Not a big Golden Girls fan here) They only really used one or two shots of the exterior and the one built in the backlot was built after that one shot was filmed. So, I'm pretty sure they were filmed at 245 North Saltair Avenue, Brentwood, Los Angeles, CA, rather than the "studios".

Re: Golden Girls at original MGM Studios

The show began airing in 1985. According to Wikipedia:

The house's address was mentioned as being 6151 Richmond Street, Miami.[18] The outside model used in the shots of the house in the series was part of the backstage studio tour ride at Disney's Hollywood Studios. This façade—along with the Empty Nest house—was among those destroyed in Summer 2003, as Disney bulldozed the houses of "Residential Street" to make room for its "Lights, Motors, Action!" attraction. The façade is based on a real house in Brentwood, California[19] located at 245 N Saltair Ave and was used in the exterior shots during the first season of the show. Later, the producers built a new model at Walt Disney World in Florida.

Can anyone help link to the Google Earth view of the house in Brentwood?

^Sorry I'm not sure how to link it.

I guess its plausible for them to say back then that it was the house. (To quote Rizzo "they're tourists, what'd they know?")

And given that it was already in production it doesn't make sense to swap the existing stills with ones from the park.

Shooting some exteriors at the new house in Orlando would have been easy and inexpensive to do, if for no other motivation than to make the house 'authentic' for tourgoers.

In all honestly though, who could tell the difference? Not like they could leave the Earful Tower in the background.

On a side note, I've recently been watching the repeats of the show. It surprised me that they only mentioned WDW a couple times, and on another occasion Sofia congratulates a Japanese caller on "finally getting a Disneyland"
