    Turning out to be a terrible summer in the media for WDW

    An accident resulting in severed fingers, an emergency evacuation of a monorail stopped mid track, and now this:

    ^ ^ CNN had a long (over 10 minutes) segment about that along with info that Sea World Orlando and Universal Orlando employees had also been arrested, though NO EMPLOYEES HAD BEEN ACCUSED OF ASSAULTING ANY GUESTS IN THE PARKS. I don't normally use all caps, but it only seems fair to the parks.

    In the CNN segment I didn't like the sheriff's argument that Disney should polygraph every potential employee. Polygraphs are inaccurate (Google them) and I've read that good method actors can easily beat them. I could imagine a potentially excellent CM being horrified if asked if he or she had done something awful that was the last thing in the world that he or she would do and giving an inaccurate indication that he or she was being dishonest.

    It's probably good that this sheriff is busting potential statuary rapists in sting operations, but his eagerness to have Disney use imperfect polygraphs and his eagerness to put first-time offenders (who were really writing to cops) on national TV made him seem like a wanna-be Big Brother or J. Edgar Hoover. Then again, as a father I didn't feel sorry for any of the arrested men in the CNN segment.

    Ugly stuff. I don't think Disney World came across badly.

    We went on a Disney Cruise less than a year after a Disney Cruise worker sexually assaulted a girl on board (he was shown on video with her on an elevator in numerous TV segments about the atrocity), but we felt our kid was even safer on the ship than at Disneyland, and we feel very safe in Disneyland, though we took the common sense approach of always sticking with our child, except when she was in the kids' club (the Oceaneers' Lab), which seemed as safe as it could be.

    I think Disney Outdoor Entertainment is doing all it can in this area, which is unsurprising given the horrific press that would follow if it didn't.

    It honestly shouldn't be a shock to anyone who sees the report. The number might be a shock, since that's a lot of people they managed to bust. But hopefully, it will get better rather than worse.

    Something like this just reminds you that it can happen anywhere and it happens everywhere. Just about any type of person, or occupation you can think of has been Catch A Predator before, even the men with the most innocent of jobs.

    You just never know, but hopefully this operation and informing people of it, will help deter other people from trying, or doing these things.

    exactly. the important thing from disney's perspective is that none of them a) had records for these issues prior to their hiring by the company and b) no abuse or activity of this terrible nature occurred on property. they are a massive company that has thousands of employees and deal particularily with children, the law of averages suggests that a few bad people are going to slip through the cracks. as long as they are weeded out before any major harm is done then things can keep going as they have. keep in mind that other orlando parks listed in the article have the same issues, disney just ends up with larger numbers because they are an exponentially larger property.

    Personally I don't think the PR situation has been that bad for disney so long as you read beyond the headline. all you have at the end of the day is the stories of an idiot who disobeyed clearly stated rules and paid the price for it, an act of god that caused an emergency evacuation on a transportation service that ended up going off without a hitch, and the stating of a statistical fact of life that is completely unavoidable and had nothing to do with anything on the property itself.

    Another thread on the DL forum discussed the CNN story that apparently fed this article. It's representing a *tiny* fraction of all Orlando employees IF it's even only considering Orlando (the article's unclear, they use a lot of terms interchangeably). Two of the cases involved possession of child pornography on Disney grounds, those are the only that the article could cite involving anything actually directly connected to Disney in any sense, even if only "where they got caught being idiots".

    I'd looked it up yesterday for the other thread and lost track before posted, but this level of abuse that apparently required a CNN blitz is, taken as a reflection of the average number of minor-based sex crimes per thousand of population, LOWER than society at large is on a general basis. You could just as easily make the argument that Disney's current ideas need to be copied by the sheriff, as his efforts aren't making the same impact.
    Credibility is to be sought for. Credulity is not. Sadly the latter is our normal human state.

    Things like these should not be taken lightly. Pedophillia involves torture and killing children. It isn't just a crime against one person but a serious threat to an entire society.

    I have a problem with the amount of employees that have been arrested in the last 8 years. This is disturbing especially when you see that Disney has not changed anything within their hiring process to combat this. Not one thing. I commend Sheriff Judd for both getting these sickos off the property and for suggesting a change in policy.


    (On a completely side note, how crazy is it that WDW has recieved this much negative publicity literally within one week of the new WWoHP expansion grand opening?)

    how exactly can they do this? people have rights too and you can't go searching through every corner of their personal lives for information that may lead you one way or another. if members in some of these sick peoples families and in general around them don't even know they engage in this behaviour just how is their employer supposed to. essentially they can check criminal records, past employment, and get a general sense of the person through interviews but thats really all they can do. again the only thing they can control is that first and foremost nothing like this ever happens on their property and second if they do gain information about any employee they deal with it swiftly and effectively. That seems to be the case here. It's not like disney is going out and hiring people off the sex offender registry or anything, this is just a sad eventuality that we need to deal with. if anything we should be commending the police for their great work not shaming an employer because they like almost everyone else around these people didn't see anything wrong with them. furthermore if only disney was having these problems I would tend to agree with your point but thats also not the case here as every other park is involved soo....

    First of all, no one has the "right" to work at Disney.

    Disney can search as extensive as you suggest, but they could also employ such tactics as using computer analyzed polygraphs during the hiring process, which are proven to be more accurate than the old squiggly line and man watching the needle jump method. Modern polygraphs can monitor changes in body temperature, perspiration, breathing and other bodily functions to make an accurate assessment to wether the person is being honest.

    They need to do something.

    Under federal law, the Employee Polygraph Protection Act of 1988, employers are prohibited from requiring employees or prospective employees to submit to lie detector tests. While modern polygraphs may be better, they can still be beaten, and innocent people can show as lying, even if they aren't. Disney isn't allowed to do it.

    UGH ! i think that it's sick that people would do such a thing ! makes you feel sad for the kids tho :/ honestly I've never seen or heard anyone who reported that they were sexually assaulted by the employees. But i do remember reading an article about some woman filing a case against Disney, because she was assaulted by a Disney character. I remember going "the heck ? it's not Disney's fault that the dude was a pervo"

    Out of the 32 theme park employees arrested, five were from Universal, two from Sea World, and the remaining 25 were from Disney. Disney is having the biggest problem with this issue, and they have not changed anything in there hiring process to combat it. It's not like all of this happened just yesterday. These numbers have accumulated over the past 8 years.
