Red Face Disney Memories - Mind if I Share?

In a recent cleaning binge, I came across some old Walt Disney World booklets, pamphlets, tickets, and all around stuff my mother saved from my family's two trips to WDW (First one in March of 1980, second one December/January 1989/90).

I've been scanning in some of the more brittle items (like the 1979 and 1980 guide books), and I was wondering if anyone else here would be interested in joining me down memory lane with these pics. For instance:

Yup, my folks didn't go for the tickets. And did they ever splurge. Anyone remember what the Canada->US Exchange rate was at the time?

Interesting story behind this: Our passes were purchased as part of an employee discount program at my Dad's employer, Algoma Steel (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario). At the time, Algoma Steel was owned by The Canadian Pacific Corporation, who also was one of the original sponsors of the Canadian Pavilion at EPCOT Center.

Let me know if you want to see more. There's plenty where that came from (my Mom was a pack-rat).

    How cool!

I still have my tickets from when I went to MK and Epcot in 1987. Unfortunately I don't have a scanner.

Re: Disney Memories - Mind if I Share?

    Thanks for the compliments.

I discovered the trip log my mom made for the trip. Turns out the two days we spent at the Magic Kingdom set them back a total of $79 for two adults and 3 children .

But I'm getting ahead of myself. Here's the front and rear cover of the 1979 guide book (yes, I said book). Total of 30 pages, just a little smaller than an 8.5x11 inch page folded in half. Anyone know when they moved from this format to the more pamphlet sized booklets? My guess is around the time EPCOT Center opened up.

    Front cover:

A larger version is available at:

    Rear cover:

    Larger one available at:

Note the photography sponsor. Another weird link to my life. The company I work for used to be owned by Polaroid (thankfully, they sold us off before they went bankrupt).

Okay, further proof I'm getting old. Here's the map from the center fold of the 1979 guide book:

I have a larger version at:
    http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...p-FullSize.jpg

The biggest kick I get is at the top left cornser of Frontierland: "Big Thunder Mountain Railroad scheduled opening late 1980", as well as the location of the Frontierland railroad station.

The only let-down I remember was not being able to ride Space Mountain. Both parents refused to ride it, neither of my brothers were tall enough to ride, and they wouldn't let me (at 10.5 years old) ride alone.

Oh well, at least I got to ride during our 89/90 trip.

Thanks Pacha. I thought this would be a good way of thanking MiceChat for providing me with good reading material.

Here's some interesting pics from the 1979 guidebook.

And this was taken out for children's Play Area?!?!

My mom was terrified of the sky ride, especially the 90 degree turn over the "Grand Prix" raceway.
We made her ride it twice .

Yes, I know, that building is still there. But notice the absence of a certain animated feature themed spinning ride to the right. And Iago and Zazu were not even a twinkle in a script writer's eye.

    $.50 for parking!
No wonder my dad was complaining about being nickel and dimed at WDW.

From the looks of things, we parked at Pluto 13 on the second day (March 6, 8:35 am according to the stamp on the back).

    One more thing for tonight.
This little gem fell out of my mom's travel log book:

    Larger version at:
    http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...ront-Large.jpg
Looks like the Kingdom was open til 9 when we were down.

Then I open it up and Great Caeser's Ghost! There's something you don't see in WDW Literature any more:

Yes, that's right, you really are looking at the Cypress Gardens logo in a Disney flyer, not to mention recommending an off-site hotel (unless there was a HOJO in the "Lake Buena Vista Hotel Plaza", then I stand corrected). And yes, we did take advantage of the discounted CG tickets.

Oh, and for those who are curious:

    A Coupon Rides:
Main Street Cinema, Horse Cars, Horseless Carriage, Jitney, Omnibus, Fire Engine and Cinderella's Golden Carousel

    B Coupon Rides:
Swiss Family Island Treehouse, Frontierland Shootin' Gallery, Mike Fink Keel Boats, Dumbo and The Mad Tea Party

    C Coupon Rides:
Walt Disney World Railroad, Davy Crockett's Explorer Canoes, Peter Pan's Flight, Snow White's Scary Adventures, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride and The Grand Prix Raceway

    D Coupon Rides:
Enchanted Tiki Birds, Tom Sawyer Island, Liberty Square Riverboats, Skyway, The Mickey Mouse Revue, StarJets, Mission to Mars and the WEDWay PeopleMover

    E Coupon Rides:
Jungle Cruise, Pirates of the Caribbean, Country Bear Jamboree, The Haunted Mansion, It's A Small World, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, Space Mountain and the Hall of Presidents

That's it for tonight. Please let me know if there's anything else you want to see from the various 1980 vintage pamphlets, books, etc., and I'll see what I can do.
