    End of Line for Disney's Train Conductor - WESH.com - 4/6/06

    Full story at : http://www.wesh.com/travelgetaways/8515043/detail.html

ORLANDO, Fla. -- In 1969, man first landed on the moon, there was a concert called Woodstock, and a man named George Britton was hired to run the railroad at Walt Disney World.

He's the only one who ever has. But all good things must come to an end, and for Britton, Thursday was the end of the line, WESH 2 News reported.

Every seven minutes, all day long, a train pulls into the station at Walt Disney World. But one trip on Thursday morning was one that Britton will never forget because it was his last.

"I'm an old roughneck and when you see people gather round and hug you with tears sending you off, am I that great that I would deserve that kind of honor?" he said.

Two years before Disney World opened, George was hired to restore discarded, turn-of-the-century steam engines. The day the park opened, they were pristine condition, and they still are today.
    Growing older is manditory
    Growing up is however, optional

! He's the one that keeps the trains going and decides which ones run. He's the only one to do it there since he has taken care of them since Disney first bought the trains!!! I  Disney's Steam Trains so I'm kind of curious as to how this will transition for one of the park's key classic attractions.

It's always sad when WDW loses one of the very few who are still left from the start, or in this case, before it.

I love old guys like that.

It is sad, though I'm sure since he is still there the person it transitions to will know what it going on.

Despite all the talk of maintenance, budgets, etc the trains really are in good shape there. I think I saw one lightbulb burnt out, but no peeling paint everywhere like I saw at DL.

Yep, MM. I have never seen the trains in anything but great shape.

George Britton's been in charge since 1969. He knows Disney quality. He obviously loves his job. Any wonder the trains look so great? I just hope he's had a few guys working under him for 15-20 years and picked that passion up.
