    Help with childhood memories

Being only 17 now and going to WDW many, many times throughought my life, I have lots of memories of things that are no longer there that I can't remember fully due to how young I was. Some of these I only saw as a baby, and only know of them due to my dad filming (parts of) them. I'd really appreciate it if anyone can help me out!

Note: It's possible that some of these were in Disneyland, and I got confused.

    1) Some kinda Muppets stage show before Muppets 3D was opened. I think there might have been two of them, since older tapes showed one that looked like it was indoors and one that looked outdoors. I remember that the outdoor stage was still around for a long while, I remember walking around on it.

    2) Once again video-only; this one was really weird. It looked like some kind of a stage show featuring Tigger (or at least Tigger was the only one in the parts filmed). He was wearing a flashy silver jacket and dancing with a bunch of girls to the song "footloose" (y'know... "everybody cut loose, footloose, kick off your sunday shoes"). It might have been held at the Galaxy Palace theater, but I dunno... I would REALLY like to know more, since I'm a huge Tigger fan.

    3) Small, semi-animated dioramas in Cinderella's castle. (Note: the emporium has similar dioramas, maybe even some of the same.)

    4) A show around where Mickey's Toontown Fair is now... this is probably the one I remember the most. I LOVED this show and saw it every time I went sometimes twice. It had Bonkers, the Rescue Rangers, Scrooge McDuck, and other characters from Disney cartoons at the time trying to find Mickey. I don't remember the name, but at one time I had a casette tape of the songs from it. I wish they would bring it back.

    5) Ninja Turtles and Ace Ventura at MGM... 'nuff said.

    6) the giant cheerios/donuts at Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. I dunno why, but I was really sad when I decided to take a look two years ago to see that they had been replaced (by a giant bee, I think).

    7) Backlot tour as it once was. I shed a tear at the waste of time it has become since.

    8) Horizons... My memories of this are vague at best, and the ONLY thing I can remember is being able to choose my own ending.

I'd greatly appreciate it if anyone could shed some light on these attractions and possibly provide pictures!

    Re: Help with childhood memories

    1) Here come the Muppets. There's a video floating around.

    2) Don't know

    3) Sleeping Beauty walkthrough in Disneyland's Sleeping Beauty Castle. This was closed a few years ago for unknown reasons, with the biggest rumor being terrorism fears. One of the little scenes in there moved to DL's Emporium for a time, I think. There's a video of it at Visions Fantastic.

    4) Toontown Fair was originally Mickey's Birthdayland and they had some sort of show celebrating Mickey's birthday that year. Maybe that's what you're thinking of?

    5) ...

    6) ...

    7) ...

    8) There's a lot of media of Horizons hanging around and a fair amount of sites memorializing it. (link, link)

    Glad to help.

    Re: Help with childhood memories

i have weird memories of what i can only guess was horizons, too. it was some living room maybe? maybe with people in space? i guess its horizons. it couldnt be anything else.

and i remember universe of energy differently too. maybe pre-ellen? when was she added? but yeah, my memories of that are weird too. the smell and setting. it didnt feel disney-ish. i was little and didnt like it.

    haha, and greatest little-kid-disney-memory ever:

i grew up next to railroad tracks so i knew how scary trains were. well. i went on mr. toad. i STILL clearly remember being in that train tunnel on the ride and turning to burry my face in my mom and crying and then being in hell. scared me to DEATH. i went on the same ride at disneyland a few weeks ago and had to close my eyes in the train part. still creeps me out.

I also remember most of Dreamflight (or whatever it was called during that time). Y'see, I used to be a complete wuss. Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Carribean, Big Thunder Mountain... you could hardly get me to go on any rides. (Apparently, it was due to my overactive imagination.) Heck, I would occasionally even enjoy a ride (Example: Funtastic World of Hanna Barbara at Universal) only to inexplicaby develop a fear of it on later trips. Anyway, during this period of sissyness Dreamflight was my favorite ride. I would often ride it over and over again; it was slow, simple, and had no scenes that were even remotely scary. I was devastated when it was removed, and despite Buzz's popularity I hate Space Ranger Spin and am still sad to see Delta Dreamflights gone.

The outdoor show was called Muppets on Location (Here come the Muppets was inside).

Was this the one with Chip & Dale in it too? If so, I loved it too. (Don't know the name though)

Actually, the Mickey show is mentioned on that Walt Dated World site... it was in Mickey's Starland. Oh, and yeah, it had the Rescue Rangers.

One more thing I remember (this one was at DisneyLAND, though) is a character meet and greet with Steamboat Willie. I always thought that was pretty cool and I'm wondering, is it still there?

Mickey's House and Movie Barn. Once guests enter Mickey's barn, they're ushered a few at a time into a movie vault room with shelves upon shelves of canned movie reels and a door to Mickey. Inside, he's costumed for the movie set he's on.

There's actually about four doors, and the shelves of reel tins are moved along a track by CMs to hide the other three.

    Yes, it's still there.

I LOVED Delta's Dream Flight, it was one of my favorite rides. To go to distant countries was really cool for me at the time and the part where it felt like you were taking off was really cool. I have a few photos from it that I took..

A few more things I remember:

    - Mickey Mania parade. Now, I was quite young, and even THEN I thought this parade was an unholy, dark creation.

    - The Dick Tracy show at MGM. This is pretty much the only thing we have on tape from back then in it's entirety, apparently my dad liked it. It was weird but cool in a strange, retro way. I've been wondering though, where in the park was this show and has the spot been used for anything since then?

    - Alice at the character breakfast at Grand Floridian. Why? 'Cause almost every time I went it was the same girl, and she actually remembered who I was.

    - This one's kinda strange, I THINK this was at Disneyland Paris (though I think it was Eurodisney then). My mom got sick somehow and she was in the infirmary there. Now I don't remember how, but somehow we managed to get ahold of Mickey, who came to see how she was feeling (I still thought he was real at the time. Well, he IS real, in a sense). It was strange but has stuck in my mind all these years, though the details are blurry.

    - Being small enough to go in Goofy's bounce house... I only managed to go in once and the second time I went to Disneyland, I was past the height limit.

-Being terrified of the Tower of Terror and having to wait while my parents went in. A very nice castmember watched me while they went on, and even got me a Mickey ice cream. It was the first one I ever had (my parents used to be heallth food nuts and pretty much wouldn't let me eat anything interesting.)

I believe Dick Tracy & the Diamond Double Cross was found in the old Theater of the Stars. Following Dick Tracy, the theater was home to Beauty and the Beast Live on Stage. After Sunset Blvd opened, the TotS moved there and is still home to BatB.

Another Memory: coming back to where Delta Dreamflight once was and being very disapointed with Space Ranger spin... does anyone else agree that it's not all it's cracked up to be? (Those of you who like it are free to your own opinion, though.)

Oh, and I fondly remember the Aladdin parade at MGM. I also remember the Aladdin-themed restaurant, and if you went upstairs there was a magic lamp with a Genie effect, is this still there?

Also, I remember seeing Disney characters wearing futuristic suits in Tomorrowland, even Roger Rabbit!

This is in Disneyland, and it's still there but mostly used for meet and greets, the whole interactive dinner show thing died a rather early death, and some would say Aladdin is better performed as the Broadway-esque show in DCA anyway.

The lamp moved to the Adventureland Bazaar so more people could see it.

Actually, there was also an Aladdin themed restaurant in the Studios. I believe it was located where Playhouse Disney currently is. Either way, it's not there anymore.

    That's correct.

The restaurant was originally a food court style place called the SoundStage Restaurant with sets and setpieces from a Touchstone film from the late 80s (Big Business sounds right ... I believe Lily Tomlin was in it).

The place had like three unique counter service areas. One was for pasta, one for sandwiches and one for salads.

The Aladdin place was the first characer-dining experience at Disney-MGM. It was a buffet. I think it was just breakfast and lunch, but never dined there.

Ohhhh MICKEY'S STARLAND!!! Man i loved that. That show was wonderful. Luckily my dad got his first camcorder a trip back in '93, so that April, he taped the whole stageshow. The whole whole thing. It has everything... rescue rangers, darkwing duck (when there's trouble just call D.W!) If you have any questions about it, i can definitely help you out.

I used to love the Backlot Tour. My whole childhood life, i wanted nothing more than to be picked to ride on top of the bee from the Honey I Shrunk the Kids segment. I never did though. Ah well, life goes on.

And Horizons... oh tears... and we must not forget World of Motion. But Horizons was wonderful. Does anyone remember the smell of orange blossoms from the agricultural technology in the desert part of the ride? I know that remains to be my favorite smell in the whole entire world because of Horizons.

Oh and Delta Dreamflight!!! Heck, i miss flying Delta and getting wings and paper cut-out mouseairs on the flight over. But i loved the ride. So So much. Especially when it was take off time and the strobe lights made you feel like you were disappearing and then you "flew" in the room with the dome sky!!! Oh the memories!!!

I miss old disney world so much. and these aren't rides/attractions, but i must comment:
    The Wand...
    Mickey's Sorceror's Hat...

They didn't keep Cinderella's Castle a giant birthday cake once the 25th Anniversary celebration was over. I assumed when they first appeared that the Epcot Wand crap would only remain up for Disney 2000, and the Hat would be taken down once Walt Disney's 100 Years of Magic was over. WHY ARE THEY STILL THERE??? But anyway, yeah

    I Love Old Disney
