Re: Boy laughs, hugs Mom and Dad after riding Disney rollercoaster

disneytim, Funny, but I went to your thread first this morning. Maybe that's just me.

But it's human nature to read/see unusual things. And most of the unusual things
    that occur are negative.

I completely agree also that the news media should really try to find positive
stories as I think they get in a rut of just reporting murders/accidents/fires/robberies.

disneytim your subject line made me smile as well. I don't think it's making light of the tragedy- Disney fans in general are not that insensitive. But you do raise a good point about the media's habits when it comes to reporting about the Disney parks.

I live not far from a regional Paramount theme park and some of the stories coming out of that place are scary. It doesn't have the same media appeal as Disney, however, so for the most part the news doesn't report anything.
Does the world really need another Disney-related blog? Probably not.

Kind of like the world didn't need Disney's California Adventure, but the Walt Disney Company built it anyway. http://disney-parks.blogspot.com

The reason we only hear about the bad parts on the news: it's the news. Every day events aren't newsworthy.

The Travel Channel and Food Network was set up to fill that big void.

Hey buddy, your opinion is your opinion, and more power to you for it. I only get gripe-y when every little thing has to be compared to TDL. Sorta like when Al was hyper-down on DCA, and any good could only be contrasted by bad ("They're making improvements to Tomorrowland - too bad DCA still sucks!") That got really bad when Tokyo Disney Seas was opening - I thought ol' Al was gonna have a coronary!

As I said in another thread. Disney parks have as much accidents as any other theme/amusement parks do.
Disney has more accidents, what I think you mean is they have the same RATIO. Smaller parks like Kings Dominion pull in 8 million, about 1/5 of that of WDW (and are only open 1/2 the year), so they have less accidents, but generally the same ratio.

Cool Re: Boy laughs, hugs Mom and Dad after riding Disney rollercoaster

These stories make the news because people are interested; the fact that every single Disney oriented web site with a message board currently has multiple threads about the RnRC death is all the evidence one should need.

I keep seeing people complaining about sensationalistic reporting of these incidents. Some actually think the media is out to get Disney, and picking on the poor helpless mouse when something like this happens. Quite frankly, I don't see it. I don't search out every news source out there, but I made a point of reading these before posting:

    http://www.wave3.com/Global/story.as...01455&nav=0RZF

    http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/06/30/coaster.death/
    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...063000518.html

I must say, that the above at least are just the facts ma'am reports of what happened. I can find nothing even remotely sensationalistic in any sentence, nor do I see anything that could remotely be called anti-Disney.

When things like this happen, there are often extreme sensationalistc statements made in response, but they're much more likely to be found in internet forums than in mainstream newspapers and newscasts. If anyone does have an example of a report on this incident that actually is sensationalistic, please provide a link. While I didn't look at all 700+ results on a google news search, I only found one that would qualify:

Well said, ralfrick. Most of the stuff I've read has had the simple facts. Doesn't mean the media isn't guilty of overdramatizing some of this stuff sometimes, but I haven't seen much of it in this case myself.
