Re: River country looking rather rough

    ^^So true.

I just loved the sandy beach and the (filtered) lake water, that still let some fish in. I loved walking along the nature trail to see what all of Central Florida once looked like. I loved sitting at Pop's Place having a burger or chicken sandwich. Heck, I even loved dropping into the pool on those slides (the first thing at Disney that really scared me as a child).

    From the Opus Archives:

Some pre-opening material, ticket, my personal opening photos, and WDW newsletter...all from June 1976:

I always liked it because the main section was fresh lake water (not chlorinated pool water). Seems dinky now by comparison to today's Disney water parks. But back when it opened...it was really something new to see such a nicely themed and landscaped water attraction in true Disney style.

That is what I miss about Discovery Island...those wooded trails through the swamps and over the water that just scream "1960s Disney".

I am a fan of the now gone Discovery Island. It's a shame to slowly close such unique places that made WDW so cool. The Fort Wilderness/Wilderness lodge area is my favorite resort part of WDW. My only advice...don't try to fix something when it is not broke. Change is good, but all RC needed was some TLC.

Awesome post Opus. One of these days I need to get to my parent's house to pull out the 'archives' I have a vivid memory of a photo of me and my sister in the 'sprinkler' area where there were rocks with water shooting out of the top where you could sit on them, cap them, etc.

the pool slides with the drops are in my memory as if it was yesterday
