'80s Nostalgia At (fka) EPCOT Center ... ?

So I was reading the Epcot page on Wikipedia (because that's the kinda stupid stuff I do) and came across this paragraph (and yeah, I know it's Wikipedia, and things can get wacky, but still.):

EPCOT is also regarded today as the quintessential park of the 1980s. There are many who feel the park is severely outdated. On the other hand, there are many who enjoy the nostalgia as there has been a growing trend toward interest in 1980s culture. To showcase this growing trend, EPCOT has a performance troupe in the Future World area perform many New Wave hits from the '80s on synthesizer instruments. The troupe dresses in Duran Duran and A Flock Of Seagulls-esque clothing and also peforms many Disney songs.
Is there anybody out there that can provide some insight on this Eighties nostalgia for the park formerly known as EPCOT Center? Is that for real? Does this '80s cover band play there? I went on a WDW trip last month and didn't see them during my two days in Future World. And are there people out there that go to Epcot trying to catch an '80s vibe?

While there was a time when the park was firmly rooted in the 80's it was not intentional. It's just that things hadn't been updated. Those are finally getting better however walking through innoventions still feels more like you're walking through 1996 world than through future world.

Truth be told, I kind of like the 80's vibe. I guess that's just me, but I like the feeling that some of the attractions there give me like Spaceship Earth and The Land which are pretty much the only two attractions that are still intact from old Epcot even though they've undergone some changes and updates in the past.

As for innoventions, I think it's time they make that Tron Arcade they proposed a while back and play into the 80's theme. Stock it with classic video games of the 80's like Centipede, Space Invaders, Dig Dug etc. Oh and Tron of course!

My opinion on Future World was that it was "unashamedly 80s" however I wouldn't want it to intentionally indulge in that avenue. Which is to say it's still a fairly relevant place with artistic elements that seem kind of 80s, but it shouldn't try to actually promote that.

It's comfortable in it's setting. It's kind of like, "this is about the future, it may look a little like a retro future, but that's just fine." The day they begin milking it with tribute bands and stuff is the day I get out of there.

I've never heard of this retro band playing in Future World, but I may have missed it. Perhaps they played one summer or something?

I never heard of the retro band either but I would have LOVED to have seen that because I grew up on those New Wave sounds.

I'll have to do some investigating when I'm there next week.

Better an 80s vibe than a 90s vibe which the park has going right now. A time of blatant commercialism and "EXTREME HIP IN-YOUR-FACE THRILLS!"

Agreed. The 80's EPCOT had a certain dignity about it and focused on the promise of the 21st century. The 90's ruined the park by making it all about selling you a toaster with a television in it and screaming in your face. "THRILLZ AND EDGY HIPNESS!" No thanks...

EPCOT (Future World, specifically) used to have a very unified theme. Now it's all over the place.

I would take our 80's EPCOT Center over the current Epcot anyday. It still had a "heart" then and that is missing now.

I think it's totally intentional. After all, they do not want to spend the proper budget to keep EPCOT Center ahead of the bunch. I blame Disney entirely for this.

it could also be said that 80's synth music is "futuristic" sounding - its all computer generated and synthy after all, so it does fit in with the Future World theme in that way... though I think that they are going towards turning FutureWorld into Tomorrowland, and Tomorrowland into Pixarland.
