Walt Disney World 12 - 26 October Trip Report

WARNING - FOURTEEN DAYS WORTH OF PHOTOS AND TEXT.

I'm back home after two weeks in WDW... and it's safe to say England in October is positively depressing. I've been home less than 48 hours and already I'm considering on jumping on the next plane back. So I'll write this report, bring the memories back, hopefully cheer up, and try not to think about all the California MiceChatters still there having fun and sorts.

So we start our quest at around 6AM on a chilly morning, when we leave for the airport for a nine hour trip to the Sunshine State.

    The sun rises in England...

    ...and sets in America.

My friend gave me a leaving present from a McDonalds Happy Meal. A Mickey Mouse wallet, coincidentally advertising Disneyland Resort Paris.

I'd love to give some of the kids in that place a good hiding.

I can't even see the golf ball! What is with the tents?

So that Saturday I'd arranged to meet up with Figment to join him on the AP previews of The Seas with Nemo and Friends. For that interesting tale... you'll have to return when I can be bothered to post the next set of photos. Jet lag isn't the prettiest puppy in the world.

Since when is England ever a bad place to be? (note: claim to greatness does not apply during world wars.)

The worst part of the trip, I've found, is awakening in your bed the next day bright and early and realizing that you're not in a hotel room, and there are no parks to visit.

What the hey?! Is he sticking his hands up his shorts leg!? I knew from the home video that the characters at DLP are beginning to "explore" more than their American counterparts, but I didn't think it was so obvious!

Yikes. Those tents are horrible. Does anyone know when/why they were put up? They weren't there when I went during spring break.

That entire overlay of tent-like diamond patterns were put up during 1998-1999 in anticipation of EPCOT's Millenium Celebration. They have been there ever since late 1999, so anyone who has been to EPCOT since late 1999 would have seen them canopy of diamonds. That was the time when the stupid wand next to Spaceship Earth was erected. Since this whole idea was based around the Olympics concepts... they tried to make this area look like an "olympic gathering plaza" of sorts, complete with that other olympic fad... pin trading. Reason why the tents are just a way to attract attention to the Pin Station in the middle of it all.
I too would hope that some good executive at WDW will see this and go "YUK!" and the whole overlay be removed and burnt to hell.

Re: Walt Disney World 12 - 26 October Trip Report

So I get to Epcot around 11AM, and check out some of the favourites. Soarin' is always unmissable, I just wish it could be a unique experience, although I cannot fault the Californian video - but I suppose I have the Californian landscape to thank for that, not the ingenuity of Michael Eisner. He drives a nice ball though. I check out Spaceship Earth... I had obviously forgotten how outdated that ride is... please Siemens, you have the power to make this ride pull in the crowds in there droves. Do it!

I do rather like the new signage, and the clever little AA seagulls.

There were a few more crazy AP holders there than I thought.

Turns out more then Figment turned up. In tow were the lovely SummerInFL, some adorable kid who she had found outside Nemo and who claimed to be her daughter (fantastic with water guns is she!), CMash95 and some Smith guy, he was interesting. The ride was cute, it was nothing amazing. Not worth a starring role in Epcot's guidemaps I don't think, or an entire pavilion heralding it as it's main attraction. The company more then made up for it though .

So we took a little trip around the world, and I had a very good chat with Summer about the weather, red phone boxes and tea. Speaking of tea, we stopped in the United Kingdom (deja vu? - hardly) for Summer to restock, and carried on over to the United States. Sorry, American Adventure.

    Rip-off!

Almost a direct clone of my street. Honest.

    Amazing singers.

This kid kept looking at me funny...

With a great deal of regret, I had to leave this most excellent group of people after far too little time with them. On my way back to the 'rents, I stopped off in Japan for a browse in the fantastic shop they have there - I really must visit Japan as soon as I can. The real one, there's only so much you can do in the pavilion.

Alas, no geisha to be seen.

Spaceship Earth my rear. How many spaceships do you know with a big glittery wand stuck on it?

So off to Blizzard Beach did we trek to on Sunday. I don't get people who would rather go to their college swimming pool then the Lagoon or Beach when they have the access to them - you know who you are. I find them excellent places to escape to - well Typhoon more than Blizzard, I do prefer Typhoon a lot more purely for the relaxation. Excellently themed - no really, they are. I did get frustrated at the fact there is only two of them though... I know there was River Country but that really was more like a big pool and that's long gone now.

    Welcome to the slopes.

    Oooh... sizzling.

I probably spent more time on this then any other attraction at WDW.

I was a big fan of Summit Plummet... when I was about 9 and had no fear. Couldn't pluck up the courage this year either.

So by Monday... we were pretty much geared up for that little hill over in the Animal Kingdom they like to call Everest. Oooh... I can't wait to see the photos of that one.

I'm curious, you called the fish & chips a rip-off, is that for price or quality or both? I thought it was very different (in a positive sort of way) than the fish & chips I've tried throughout the US, and I was disappointed that it's the only outlet of that chain in North America.

Is that particular outlet just bad or are the Fish & Chips in Britain even better than that on average? Oh my goodness, I don't want to have to fly for 13 hours for a good fish fillet!

Price-wise. You can get better quality fish and chips for about... £1.50 in England. The fish and chips at Epcot are about £4.50.

Love the trip report and the conversation. You better bring me some Twinings tea next time you visit, so I don't have to pay $4.50 a box for them. LOL

Was lovely to meet you and learn about the wonderful differences in Epcot's UK vs the real thing.

    More pictures!

Speedway, that "kid" looks like Bill who used to post on Micechat WDW all the time. Did you happen to say hello? He might have seen some Micechat sign on your cloths or he had met you at a previous meet.
