The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights

So tonight they had a Cast Member preview of "The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights" at the Disney-MGM Studios. I went and took some video and thought I would share it all with you.

Now unlike years in the past, they have something new this year, the lights on the street "Dance" with the music.... so far there is only one song that the lights are programed to.. but I am hoping that once it fully opens that they will have a few more... here are the links to the video:

It is really cool in person

    Enjoy all!

It may be a big accomplishment for WDW, but not for Disney..since they did the original dancing light display at TDL back in 2003, called "Lights of Romace" during Cinderellabration event days....and NO park has yet duplicated that spectacular light and music tribute to Cinderella yet. But I am looking forward to seeing the Osborne display this year. The video posted by Jimmybop is quite nice and the display looks rather impressive. Previews for Apers anytime soon?

Not sure.. The preview tonight was suppose to be for Studio cast only (along with their friends and family), but there was no one checking for IDs so anyone could of walked in.But according to a sign that was set up by the lights it officaly opens November 13th and runs though January 7th.

I echo the thanks for posting these. I do so ache inside to visit WDW during the holiday season. Maybe one of these years...

TDLfan, I can only image what it must have been like at TDL in 2003 based on this video. You were so lucky to get to see it.

Could someone post the story of how these came to be in MGM, can't remember all the details.......?
Mom, remember, it's not what a person is like on the outside that counts,
it's what they are like in their HEART!

Re: The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights

Basically I beleive the story is that an Alabama family (The Osbornes, but not THE Osbornes) put out all of these lights each year for their holiday display. However, their neighbors quickly began to become annoyed a little with the constant traffic, light, etc., so the Osbornes were forced to put an end to them. However, WDW soon became interested in them and made an arrangement to show them in the residential street area of the Backlot Tour. After the residential street set was torn down, the lights soon found their ways onto the Streets of America.

I believe that is the story in a nutshell. If anyone has more details, I'd love to have them filled in too.

Arkansas pal, not Alabama. But yeah, that's the story.

In fact, Jennings Osborne bought both houses on either side of his just to display the lights. That caused massive traffic backups, and the State's Supreme Court ruled that the lights had to be taken down. So he donated them to WDW, and they've been here ever since. (save for a year)

What jimmybop's update lacks is that it also snows during the lights when they are steadily on, the lights dance every 10-15 minutes, and there is currently one song that the lights dance to, but by the official opening, there should be three songs. The current song (in the video) is Christmas Eve - Sarajevo 12.24 by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. All of the dancing songs will be Trans-Siberian Orchestra songs. If you're not familiar with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, you should be. The video that made dancing Christmas Lights popular uses one of their songs. In fact, that's why Disney is using them for the lights, it was that video that inspired them to re-do the spectacle to dance. What video do you ask? This one...

(The song is Wizards in Winter)

Oh, and back to the lights at the studios, in between the dances, the same old favorites that played years before are still there.

Re: The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights

the osbournes didn't donate the lights. disney paid for them and for the transport to the studios. Jennings osbourne came personally and supervised the set up the first time the lights were shone. He had an interview on our local tv station. I had a chance to meet him very briefly . just to shake hands and say hello.
