Which one is really the original. The one in WDW opened first so does that make ours the original?
*sigh* The Original Haunted Mansion opened in 1966 I believe. It was either the year after Walt died or the year after Pirates opened. One of the two. Back then, WDW was still just a chunk of land ripe for the development teams to come in.
The biggest difference between the two straight away is the architecture. DL's is themed after a southern plantation home, while WDW's and TDL's are more modern Gothic dating somewhere around the late 1700s if I had to guess as they were using Thomas Jefferson's favorite achitectural style. I'm probably way off, but it's definately a different design style, that much is certain. Phantom Manor, however, is straight out of the Psycho film from what I've read.
Another differance is the stretching room. DL's is an elevator that goes down, which means the floor is sinking. WDW's doesn't need this, so the ceiling goes up.
DL's has The Hall of Limbo (one of my personal favorite parts of the queue) with the changing portraits. WDW's doesn't. Instead, you are given one changing portrait in the holding area before going into the stretching room, which DL doesn't have.
Incidently, Phantom Manor's holding room has real spiders from what I've read. The cleaning staff is rumored to be told not to clean that area for authenticity.
WDW's version has the Library and the Phantom Pianist, DL's doesn't.
DL's Following Busts are in The Hall of Limbo, WDW's are in the Library, but they don't follow you until about halfway into the room because of how the negative recess was pulled.
I believe DL's Leota is the only one that floats last I checked. WDW is the only one that has Leota's tombstone sitting outside.
All things considered though, the two attractions were pretty much designed and fabricated at the same time. As the attractions opened two years apart from each other, Imagineering created similar sets, illusions, and characters simultaneously. What has changed was a result of land possiblities, upgrades, and upkeep.
In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of fate.
Can any of you name all the differences between Walt Disney World's Haunted Mansion and the original in Disneyland? I bet you can't!!!
Well for one thing... the WDW looks like it hasn't been refurbished since 1971, as opposed to DL's fresher approach of late. The differences used to be primarily in the queue, outdoor facade, and the fact that your journey at DL begins at the staircase before going into the opening casket scene, and WDW's has a library, piano room, and long gallery corridor. As for further differences.. I know many have been implemented at DL of late, like the floating Leota head and others. WDW features the eye-opening Leota tombstone outside.. For a more fair comparison, you have to pit WDW against TDL's since they are virtually identical in every way.. but there are four major effects in Tokyo that Orlando does not have. can you name those?
