Lovely for faux, tongue-in-cheek Chinese worshipping, but this picture looks so awesome because I'm with a Chinese character in an authentic Chinese setting.

Same goes for Belle. I have a photo with her in the French library. I think they are awesome places for characters as long as we remember that the characters are a bonus, and that the main draw is the authenticity of the replication of the countries.

Great example. I think that's how it would work best. I don't want to see a blown out animated world within the world showcase... but I'd go as far as saying that a darkride involving animated figures would be quite nice in their respectful spots as long as the exterior didn't draw too much attention to it.

The big difference I see is from and about. Thematically it may work, but I just don't think it is in the spirit of World Showcase.

So let's see, the list so far is...

The Brother Bear gang over in Canada...
Belle and occationally beast over in France...
Mulan, Mushu, and what's-his-face in China...
Aladdin, Jasmine, Abu, and Genie in Morocco...
    Jose and Ponchito in Mexico...
I know Mickey and friends have been spotted at the US pavlion...

Who do we have representing the UK, Germany, Norway, and Japan (as well as any others I may have missed)?

UK? We have quite a few.

Mary Poppins, Bert and the penguins.
Winnie the Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore and Tigger.
    Peter Pan and Wendy.

Also, in France it is rare that Belle appears without Beast, and Cinderella and Aurora regularly appear as a duo.

D'oh! I should have realized Peter Pan, Wendy, and Mary Poppins were UK Disney Representatives!

And how does Cindy and Aurora fit in France?

The fairytales of Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty were crafted by Charles Perrault, who also wrote Beauty and the Beast. They have as much right to be in France as Beauty and the Beast does. Vive la Cendrillon et belle au dormant.

It seems that where characters are placed depends on the origins of their author or where they were created - not necessarily where they are set. Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Beauty and the Beast could really be set in any European country, yet their author was French.

Oh and I forgot to add Alice + Co to the list of characters in the UK. She's rarer though.

Yes, Snow White does appear in Germany - I'm not sure about Pinocchio though? Surely he should be in Italy? Yeah he would look out of place there and more at home in Germany but still..

I couldn't remember if it was Germany or Italy for Pinocchio, Italy does make more sense though.

Yep - I believe it's Pinocchio & friends *should* be in Italy, but he pops up with Snow White in Germany.
Does Quasimodo still make appearances in France?

So now they just need Norwegian and Japanese characters.
(It's not like the snipers from "Commando Duck" are going to be Japanese face characters any time soon... )
Can we expect Ratatouille characters to start popping up in France?

Personally I'm all for it, as long as the spirit of the pavilion is upheld.

Re: Animated Characters at EPCOT World Showcase. Like or Dislike?

The problem is the characters are used as a crutch. Its been a problem now for quite some time. Its difficult for WDI to get new projects or updates approved unless they justify them with cross-sell opportunities.

I agree that, used correctly, the characters could work in most cases. But they are used as a substitute for real creativity, and in many cases the spirit of the land/park is not upheld. A couple of the worst examples are the Magic Carpets and Stich's Great Escape.

Relatively speaking, the Nemo overlay seems to have been done decently, but they could have done much better by looking at places like the Monterey Bay Aquarium and raising the bar from there.

Actually, Stitch's Great Escape is probably the best of the worse examples as to how much of a crutch the characters are for Disney.

Nemo, on the other hand, was pretty well handled and enhanced what many thought was just a big and boring aquarium in Epcot. I'm not familar with Monterey Bay Aquarium, but from what I've seen, Disney did a decent job. I just wish they didn't change the name to "The Seas with Nemo."

Then agian, my favorite attraction in Future World is "Imagination with Figment."

I'm surprised we haven't had a Japanese Disney character, unless you count the anime.

Re: Animated Characters at EPCOT World Showcase. Like or Dislike?

As long as I can remember, characters have always had a very small presence in EPCOT Center. I recall seeing Mickey in a Captain EO-type getup the first year I went. Seeing Jasmin and Aladdin in Morocco or Mulan in China is less offensive to the authenticity of those countries, then it is to seeing a big cartoon character, like The Three Caballeros in Mexico. Just like everything else, it's a matter of balance. Characters like Mulan or Jasmin have a better, more authentic presence to stand against their respective backdrops here then in any other park, and I don't feel it should be ignored altogether. But just because a couple of characters work doesn't mean they all work. There's an aesthetic balance that should be struck. After all, the whole point of World Showcase is to make us feel like we've entered into those countries magically. The abrupt appearance of a obtuse cartoon caricature disrupts the illusion. It's much easier to believe I'm in ancient China with Mulan, then it would be to believe I'm in rural Canada with Brother Bear.

    Anime, in general, isn't Disney.

Unless Disney decides to push Spirited Away into the parks, but I'm not sure if they own any rights to that short of production dubbing. Then again, they could just shove a random Kingdom Hearts cosplayer there and call it even. (Like that would work LOL!)

You want Kuzco in Mexico instead? Kim Possible is already country hopping from what I understand with that Team Possible game of theirs.
