Deer Gets Hit And Runs At WDW

Jeffrey Norberry, 56, was biking this morning along a secluded area on Walt Disney World property when a deer ran across the roadway and collided with him head-on, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Norberry, who was wearing a helmet, flipped over the handle bars of his bike and the deer before crashing to the ground shortly before 3 a.m.
The man ws taken to Celebration Hospital with minor injuries.
The deer was nowhere to be found.
According to the Insurance Information Institute, deer-vehicle collisions are most likely to happen from to sunset to midnight and during the hours shortly before and after sunrise.

Do we know if he was driving a motorcylce or a bicycle? It seems a bit odd to me having an accident like that while riding a bicycle.

Bikes still go 25+mph and just like a car.. don't turn or stop on a dime. Deer often jump INTO things or right in front of things.

I know that deer often jump in front of things and I have rode a bike almost my whole life, flynnibus

I just thought it was odd because the chances of an accident like that are slim to none....especially at WDW.

Animals can be so unpredictable! That's why I always wear a helmet when riding my motorcycle or bicycle. Glad the guy is OK!

BTW, did you notice the time this happened? 3AM seems like a really odd hour to be out biking!

Not really, as population grows and more and more wild spaces are taken, and more and more people jump on the anti-hunting bandwagon, this is going to become more and more prevalent.

I live in one of the most populated places in the country. I have 5 minutes from the George Washington Bridge and NYC. I see more deer dead on the roads around here, then when I go to Vermont or New Hampshire.

it really is becomming a problem. We have a big problem in this county with black bears. They come into peoples backyards on a regular basis. They have been seen walking down the streets in some towns. Same thing with deer.

I would guess that WDW, with the vast areas of undeveloped land it has, and surrounded by the urban spraw that has grown around it, it is a vast haven for all sorts of wildlife.

Based on what? The place is more wooded then it is open. That would make it MORE likely, not less.

And as Phonedave pointed out.. these vermin of the wood are everywhere. I work in a cluster of buildings.. backing up to a 8 lane divided road. Yet, I still find deer along our parking lot.. and even in the middle of the lawn in front of our building where the nearest ground cover is HUNDREDS of yards away. And this is just at twilight, not late at night.

The only thing making it less common is simply the # of bikes on the road compared to the # of cars on the road. Beyond that, deer have shown speed really doesn't make that much of a difference. They'll jump into you at 25mph (happened to my wife in the middle of neighborhood just 2 years ago) just as likely as they'll jump into you or in front of you at 50mph.

They aren't the most brilliant creatures.
