The huge difference and why DLs is perceived as better (IMHO) is upkeep and maitenence. The show, as you said, isn't very different. I think WDW used the excuse that the mansion is supposed to look rundown to actually allow it to get rundown. The sound was horrible, it would cut in and out. It seemed like they just kept turning the lights down in certain scenes to hide problems. Last visit in april, I could hardly see certain show aspects, especially in the stairwell area.
Does/Did DL version have the spiders? I can't remember. Glad to see them go.

I had the same problem in January! We couldn't see anything! My mom and I turned to each other and at the same time said, "Does it seem too dark in here?" We thought it was just an error, and mentioned it to the CM, who said, "It's supposed to be that way." Um, no.
Now it all makes sense....
