What's up with those finger scanners?

So last week when I was at WDW, they had finger scanners on the ticket machines. I was wondering if they actually did anything (like possibly once it scans your finger the first time, it remembers your fingerprint) or are they planning on doing something with them & the tickets or AP's in the future?

I believe its biometric and something like it measures bones or something and not actual fingerprints. My understanding is it matches your finger scan to your ticket to prevent you from passing the ticket along to anybody else. Kind of a summary of what I have read before but I'm sure someone knows better.

I was just wondering if eventually they'll make you scan your finger to your card when you check-in. Most of the time we were there, they didn't even ask us to scan our fingers.

Depending on crowds and whatnot, they might not need you to do the finger machine. But yes, it basically measures the shape, not the fingerprint. It is used so people don't sell used tickets and exchange tickets.

Has that been going on for quite a while now? I remember using them last October.....
Mom, remember, it's not what a person is like on the outside that counts,
it's what they are like in their HEART!

Yes, they have been there for about a year now, as I used them in August of last year too!

They started replacing the old two-finger scanners I believe last summer (or early last year).

I've always doubted how well these really work. I think they are more for show than anything.

They aren't for show and for the poster above, it has nothing to do with Big Brother. These scanners measure only the biometrics, not the finger prints. They are used so that people don't sell used tickets and pretty much for that reason only. Disney doesn't tend to waste money on these type of things unless it will help them in the long term.

I hate to tell you, but they DO read your fingerprint. It assigns a numerical value to locations on your finger, then attaches that information to your ticket. It does not store the actual fingerprint in a database, just the numerical values. But make no mistake, they DO read your fingerprint. They just don't store it.

They'd have a buttload of people wining about privacy issues and big brother issues if they actually took and kept fingerprints.

Generally, because there is really nothing tied together, it's the number and the fingerprint hash.

Generally, as with most general (non-law enforcement) fingerprint systems, they do not actually keep your 'print'. Instead, they get a 'hash' of the size and shape of the finger. For example, on my desktop, my finger has this hash:

    "10761567AF68074774CDF5659865AB3"

Basically, the fingerprint reader has a tolorance for variances in the hash. Since it checks for changes and updates, it's fairly accurate, quick, and keeps the ticket abuse down.
