the Living Seas - before Nemo?

I went on the new Nemo ride the other day and I was rather surprised to find that the ride was kinda less unique than I expected. The big payoffs come during the Crash sequence where it really feels like you're going backwards or sprial downwards and stuff. But for the most part it was basically "Finding Nemo, the Ride". You dont even see them mingle with real fish until the very end of the ride, literally where you get off.

So my question was did they have a clamshell ride there before? Man I cant remember back to my last trip. So refresh my memory as to what the original Living Seas pavilion was like?

At the original Living Seas, you went through a queue into a theatre, where you watched a movie, then you went into another theatre to see another movie, then you took the "hydrolators" down and rode Sea Cabs through the tanks, where you reached Sea Base Alpha.

    That's the Cliff Notes version.

If I remember correctly, the ride part was just looking at fishies with a bit of narration. Also, the ride cars themselves didn't have the clam shells - just basic bench seats, if memory serves me correctly.

Well... this is WDW affter all.

I don't think I have been on that version of the ride yet, but Test Track used to have a crash sequence before they went cheap and took the animated crashing car out for one that simply vibrates.

Right. I loved that attraction when it came out, but I'm a "zoo buff" so.... The biggest difference I think is the post "ride" part. While Turtle Talk is amazing, the old Living Seas had some interesting hands-on/smaller exhibits that were well done but now are gone for a giant Bruce

you started in the preshow theater then went into hydrolaters to sea base and got into "sea cabs" thing people mover type vehicles and it took you by the fish then you got off at the exhibits at the end of the ride.

hydrolaters.. the type of classic Disney 'magic' show elements that seems so lacking in recent creations

    Agree.

But FYI...old Living Seas sponsor United Technologies did and does own The Otis Elevator Company. That could have been the "push" for the whole Hydrolator thing in the original show design. I seem to recall hearing something to that effect.

That's fine by me.. it was quite a convincing effect.. and a posterboy for the type of things that made Disney parks so unique in the past.. Now there seems to be a focus on technology - and less on physical tricks to achieve the trick.

And when I saw Opus posting.. I was hoping for some great archive material!

I thought all there ever was to TT's crash scene was a giant wall that opened up as you approached which led to the speed run.

I haven't seen the fully Nemoized Living Seas yet, but it would have been better if they kept Nemo out of it and just updated it. There are a lot of wonderous things deep beneath the sea that really exist, and Nemo isn't one of them.

I was definately disappointed in this redo when i heard a redo of sea cabs was coming, i was totslly hyped as they were a part of the ride i seriously missed. How disappointing is it that you don't see actual fish until you're about to get out of the clamshell, i know my memory is iffy, but i thought i remembered going forward thru the tank with viewing on both sides of you, its been awhile, did i make that up?

I vaguely remember the vehicles being like the Spaceship Earth ones, not the HM like clamshells. I believe their might have been viewing of fish on both sides, but I am not 100% positive. Sadly, EPCOT continued it's downward spiral with this nemoization.
