Re: Teppan Edo Review/Photos

It is very likely a bullet train (hence being in the Japan pavilion). The first below is of one of the older classic models. The second pic is a somewhat newer version (I think this is the one represented with the kiddie meals though I cannot see the nose very well in last page's photos):

Re: Teppan Edo Review/Photos

Thanks! Looking at it, it still reminds me of a Tokyo monorail toy I received (from TDL). I am not very good at telling the difference, I guess.

But thank you for the photo! I still would love one for my home.

Re: Teppan Edo Review/Photos

^^ Most welcome...just googled them...added a second pic which I think is closer to the one in the restaurant. If you are not familiar with the later models of Shinkansen, check 'em out on google...they are very cool.

I will check those out, thanks for the 2nd pic - very nice. I haven't had much time to be looking for anything (still working on moving to a house this week!) I was very fortunate to be at Disney yesterday at all, let alone at Teppan Edo with my camera.

Re: Teppan Edo Review/Photos

In order to settle this identity dispute, let me propose on theory...

Since the "train-like" object is positioned on a single table, it can be safe to say that it is a monorail since it is resting on what is essentially one rail.
If one were to bring together two tables and place the object in the center of the two tables, what you would have is a birail object otherwise known as the Shinkansen.

Very good, we've made it a monorail! (I feel like the scene from A Bugs Life - "but it's a rock!")

Brilliant conclusion. It may look like a bullet train, but I think science and engineering wins out! Thanks for the clarification!

And the fact that it is in Epcot, with a monorail running through it. That seems to make great sense!

Re: Teppan Edo Review/Photos

What a wonderful review of Teppan Edo ... I almost feel is if I were there.

Oh wait, I was. :-)

The restaurant redo, much like the Mitsukoshi Department Store below, was done very first-rate. It is an upscale and modern version of what was there before. You have to see the Mount Fuji art -- it appears to be a giant plasma type screen -- in the sushi bar section (Tokyo Dining, I believe). The CMs were all friendly to a fault. And Aiko was so cute, you almost wanted to wrap her up and bring her home :-)

It was also so pleasant to simply walk up to a WDW full serve resturant, put your name in, get a pager and get seated.

Of course, that does leave out the magical calling 180 days in advance to plan a meal deal that WDW management wants. But it brought back very fond memories of what EPCOT dining used to be, minus the WorldKeys.

The food wasn't really any different than before. The presentation of the salad was slightly better/larger. And I was glad to see WDW scouring Atlantic City for Japanese chefs ... way too many are clearly getting left behind if Bob is an example.

I certainly don't find the prices to be cheap -- our meal was free thanks to the wonders of the DDP 'Hurricane Season Special' ... they are very similar to what the Teppanyaki pricepoints were. But I should remark that about 3-4 years ago they stopped including soup and salad with every entree (something that had been done since 1982 and it done at every similar style Japanese resturant I have ever dined at in the uSA) while prices were raised.

And as Denise said, this is the only locale in EPCOT that does not accept the DDE (something that management frankly should mandate, even if Disney has to make up the 20% itself).

But the food quality, presentation and the 'show' that is why people enjoy these restaurants was all very, very good.

I would put it up with the best EPCOT locales now and advise any spirits out there who enjoy Japanese cuisine to check it out.

For what's its worth my new top 5 of EC dining (not counting price) would be:

1.) Bistro de Paris;
2.) Coral Reef;
3.) Tutto Italia;
4.) Teppan Edo;
5.) Le Cellier;

Re: Teppan Edo Review/Photos

What a great review. I'm leaving for WDW in less than two weeks and am going to try to check out this remodeled restaurant. It was always one of my favorites.

Any Japanese resturant that I have been in like this is on the expensive side, that just seems to be the way they are (or maybe the saki liberates my wallet) - but yes, all serve soup and salad. Geeze, is the $.40 of icerberg with some ginger dressing and the $.50 of dashi or miso going to break the profit margins? Its not even a complicated prep item. The wait staff can finish them themselves.

I enjoyed the days where I could walk up to a kiosk, talk with a person in Disney Reservations (face to face) to make dining choices for that day.

Re: Teppan Edo Review/Photos

I haven't actually seen that board. But my favorite was when I could do it while they were behind a screen! How long has it been since the monitors have been up? Lots of years now.
