World's Finest: Disney-MGM Studios

Today over at the DRK Articles, we present Part 2 of 4, in a series by Tom Corless, called "World's Finest". Which will take a look at the best & worst attractions, restaurants, etc. in each of the 4 Walt Disney World parks. And we're going to continue it this time, with the Disney-MGM Studios!

We really appreciate any discussion. So please, do!

Re: World's Finest: Disney-MGM Studios

I agree with much of it except:

I think that the counter service at MGM is terrible, I don't like eating there at all. I finally found an easy chicken curry recipe to make at home after having the worst chicken curry (ever) there.

Table service is much better. That isn't saying much, but I've had good meals at the Hollywood and Vine restaurant as well as The Brown Derby.

Also, the Fantasmic at WDW pales in comparison (IMHO) to the one at Disneyland. I don't even bother going anymore, I think the very best show in all of WDW (nighttime) is Illuminations. That of course is opinion, but it's mine. I've seen Illuminations so many times since it first started, I never get tired of the music and fireworks.

Actually, my favorite (best) attraction would be Great Movie Ride, followed by the Tower of Terror. I like the Muppets, but I do think it's a little dated as well.

As far as shopping - best, Sid Cuhuengas. Worst - most everything else.

I guess I didn't agree that much!

Oh, I thought these were your opinions too! I added Sid Cuheungas after you probably ready my post (I kept remembering things as I was typing).

Sid Cuheungas is good, but too expensive. I also think the Great Movie Ride is the best as well. However I'm too scared to go on Tower of Terror anyway!

Well, EVERYTHING is too expensive. I think Sids has a lot of cool, interesting merchandise. I've not actually bought anything there.

My second favorite shop - where I also don't tend to buy much - is the Villain shop with all the candy. Fudge is SO expensive, I can make that pretty cheaply and just as good (or better) at home!

MGM is my 4th favorite park at WDW (of the main parks). I mostly like it when they do Star Wars Weekends, that is a lot of fun. Otherwise, I don't spend tons of time there.

Re: World's Finest: Disney-MGM Studios

I agree with most of what was said. Although I liked Fantasmic at MGM, I agree that Illuminations is much better.

I've never actually had a counter-service meal at MGM, usually Sci-Fi or 50's Prime-Time where the food is good enough. Then again, it's all about the atmosphere.

Nothing to be afraid of.

I don't really like drop towers. However I have been thinking of trying ToT out here at DCA.

Re: World's Finest: Disney-MGM Studios

I can barely stand Disney MGM Studios these days. I love the Hollywood Blvd and Sunset Blvd streets - Beautiful and well designed. However, the rest of the park is such a mess. It is like a tangled web of roads and much of it is ugly. With so much else to do at WDW I find that we spend less and less time at MGM. I could go without it all together except that I just love their version of the Tower of Terror. Great Movie Ride was a favorite of mine for a long time, but it isn't in very good shape and really needs a refurb and some new scenes.

It is a movie park, let's see some new movie themed rides.

I really hope that they get some fancy new rides and theming soon.

Actually, we should just call it the NBC shop now...little to no villains items any more (in October, there was one side of a shelf that had villains gear).

Perhaps I should be grateful it's not POTC?

Oh wait...NBC and Pirates, sorry (there's a big thing with "fill a pirate skull" and "fill a treasure chest" junk...almost forgot)!

That used to be my sister's and my favorite store in MGM! Oh well...anyway, I agree with everything you pointed out, Denise, except Muppets being outdated...I can't get enough of it - I agree with Tom that Muppets is a gem!!

And to comment on Tom's article about Voyage of the Little Mermaid- I think it is a great show, don't get me wrong, but along with much of DHS, it is woefully in need of some TLC. In particular, I think that the quality of the film shown looks just as old as it is - in 2007, with digitally remastered movies, why can't they replace the clips? They look terrible! I find that so distracting whenever I see that show.

At the corner, near Brown Derby and Starring Rolls (I am assuming you are talking about the shop and not where I live).

The one thing, everything is subjective. I was hopeful when MGM first opened. When I was out at Uni Hollywood this past year (first time), THAT was interesting. The park, not so much. But the backstage tour I took was fantastic. I was hoping that MGM would be more of a working studio, not just a theme park.

The hat is also ugly, I thought I would mention that. I like to point out sometimes that I coined the "Big-As*-Hat" terminology still used around the internet. The theater is beautiful, the hat is not.

I have never seen the Voyage of the Little Mermaid. I didn't realize there wasn't so many villains items in the shop anymore, I think most of the MGM shops are catering to either High School Musical, LOST (not to mention Pirates/Princesses) etc. Really sad, as far as merchandise goes.

I do enjoy the Muppet Movie, but I would love to see them remake it to look newer. But again - that is my personal thoughts, though I don't always like things changed. I prefer Cranium Command the way it is, as well as Impressions de France (my favorite movie at Disney, about one of my favorite places to visit!)
