WDI has affirmed that the soft opening of Spaceship Earth will take place in mid-December. A new soundtrack, narrator, storyline overlay ought to bring some fresh life into the aging attractio. The tecnnolical modernization should tweek SE into a fully embellishing cutting edge experience.
"Following man through the ages of innovation" should be an exciting new premise.
Wonder if narrator Judi Dench will give it a Bond feel. Ohhhhh James!

I thought it was down until February at least? Can you post link to official statement? I would be delighted if I can catch it when I go late December...since I don't get to visit WDW very frequently.
No - there has already been a thread I think on this (the Orlando Sentinel had an article a day or two back). I stopped there yesterday, and it looks like mid-December is a good timeframe. There was talk that it would be this week, but it didn't seem likely. It is possible that not everything will be working when it opens in December - February would still be considered a grand opening.

BTW nice pic...this was just like the image I had on a jigsaw puzzle my parents bought for me on a trip to Epcot around 1985. How do they make the light fall on the top of the sphere?
The light color on the top likely emits from some elevated location (such as a pole) - perhaps even from atop the SE sphere itself.
Also, I believe that there are companies that will convert any photograph that you desire into a puzzle.

Excellent news about the soft opening!! We will be there in mid-January!
With the soft opening occuring in mid-December, hopefully the ride will be in full swing by mid-January, Jane.
While you're at EPCOT, don't forget to catch Test Track. Mission:Space, The Land (including Soarin'), Nemo Seas - and World Showcase's Illuminations!

How would one get into a soft opening? Is it the same as Disneyland, where you just have to be lucky and be in the right place at the right time? Raffles? CMs only?
CMs sometimes are selected to experience attractions prior to a soft opening. Soft openings are for the general public. Sometimes there is an advance alert as to the general time frame that one will occur - but they are never exact.
In this case, you would need to schedule your vacation stay at WDW for sometime in mid-December and hope to get lucky.

I'm crossing my fingers that it will happen when my friend is back in town (we're likely to go to epcot either the 20,21, or 22). If I am a cast member...they have to let us on...heehee...spaceship earth sounds like a fun ride to be stuck on...I like to see people around me go crazy
