Epcot's Official Name

For you Epcot specialists out there....what is the official and formal name of Epcot? I believe it to be just plain and simple Epcot. No Park (like Magic Kingdom Park) or Theme Park (like Animal Kingdom Theme Park). Just plain Epcot. What do you think? Many thanks.

Re: Epcot's Official Name

It actually used to be EPCOT Center. The Center was eventually dropped and it became EPCOT 97', EPCOT 98', etc.... for a while. Then the year naming got tired for them and it just became epcot. No center, no capitalization, just lower case epcot. Many people believe that's when the decline began in the park.

I think now it is just Epcot. But I usually still spell it EPCOT.

Re: Epcot's Official Name

Originally it stood for Experimental Prototype City Of Tomorrow.

It doesn't really reflect its roots any more as it isn't much of a city, but it does celebrate the cities and cultures of the world as well as technologies that can help build the cities of tomorrow.

Re: Epcot's Official Name

It never really was a city. It was only a city in Walt's dreams. The park instead became modeled after a World's Fair. Its left its roots a bit because it doesn't focus on edutainment and futuristic ideals achieved through human invention anymore, not because its not a city.

Re: Epcot's Official Name

I don;t care what they say... to me EPCOT Center will always be EPCOT Center, just like the Tomorrowland Terrace will always be.

OFF TOPIC - there used to be a scale model of Walt's dream city that was a part of the old Peoplemover attraction at Disneyland.

Re: Epcot's Official Name

The year names were '94 and '95, not '97 and '98. Today the park is officially "Epcot". I prefer EPCOT Center, and can't stand using "EPCOT" in reference to the park and not the city.

Except that its Community, not city.

I personally always call and spell it EPCOT although I do like the term EPCOTCenter very much.

Emphasis mine.

Not sure if that is directed to me or not, but EPCOT stands for exactly what the quote says.

That was a famous flub that Walt made when filming the "Disney World" and EPCOT film. Elsewhere in the film Walt does it right using "Community." Marty Sklar (who wrote the script) talks about this often in public speeches.

What's kind of funny about the flub if you watch the film, is that immediately after the flub...Walt spells it out a second time, and you can hear and see him give "Community" a little extra emphasis...as if he realized he blew it the first time.

It is and always has been "Community."
