Power off from Orlando to Miami

CNN is reporting that power is out to a large part of southern Florida.

Does anyone know if WDW is effected?

Does WDW have it's own power plants or does it draw from the civil grid?

Re: Power off from Orlando to Miami

I'm reading reports of sporadic outages across the entire state.

    http://www2.tbo.com/content/2008/feb...-power-outage/

TAMPA - An unknown problem in the statewide power grid has sparked widespread outages throughout the Tampa Bay area this afternoon, as utility companies scramble to figure out what went wrong.
Tampa Electric was fielding calls from customers whose power went out this afternoon, said Laura Duda, a utilities spokewoman. She said she didn't know how many people were without electricity or when the problem will be completely fixed.
TECO is part of the statewide grid, she said, but because power is out here doesn't mean the statewide problem is to blame.

Apparently WDW may have been impacted. Most of Orlando is up and running, but there are patchy problems (15 dark intersections in the city).

WDW in invoked in one report, so either the northern part of the region (maybe MK?) got dark, or maybe the problems were just north of WDW. Too early to say yet. Need independent confirmation.

Found the source of the issue. I wonder if I'll have power when I go home tonight. LOL

Last update I read stated that Walt Disney World's co-generation facility was only capable of providing approx one-third of WDW's power needs. The rest it purchases off-the-grid.

Although there was a point decades ago when Disney's co-generation facility not only supplied all Disney needed, but actually sold its excess power to the Florida grid at a nice profit.

Just heard an interview with a Florida Power spokesperson, and she mentioned some power outages "outside of Disney" that lasted about 20 minutes.

Re: Power off from Orlando to Miami

Here in Miami, the power went out around 1ish and came back about an hour later. I was in school, and at first I thought it was just a minor power outage in the building I was in, then I realized that it was the entire school that was out of power (so I thought it was only an issue in the school and surrounding area), and we were later informed that most of Miami-Dade County and the state of Florida was out!

The outage didnt seem to last very long and I heard reports of people being stuck in elevators and a few car accidents, but everyone is safe now and Homeland Security has confirmed that this was a technical issue, not related to terrorism or anything like that. FPL (Florida Power & Light) has stated that all power should be back by now (5:30 PM ET), and anyone without power afterwards should report it.

Well we never lost power here at OFT so at least the East side of the property is OK.

Looks like all power is for the most part back and I dont think WDW was affected, although I did hear in the news reports that parts of the Central Florida area in Orlando and Tampa had reportad outages earlier this afternoon.
