Exclamation WATCH OUT for SCAM at WDW!!!

Reports on the news this week are mentioning about a scam going on at WDW. This pertains to folks staying on property. Some of them have been effectively robbed of their credit card credentials and become victims of credit card identity theft.
On at least a couple of instances... guests have been called at their rooms (happened at the Poly in January) by a person pretending to be a Cast Member, informing them of a great deal of a dinner show at any of the resorts, but they are asking for credit card info to secure a reservation. Those who have fallen victim of this scam, are told to go to the hotel's front desk 24 hrs later to pick up tickets for this deal. When they do go to the desk the next day, there is no tickets and no record of such incidents.

WDW maganement is advising guests NOT to give out their credit card numbers of personal info over the phone because NO Cast Member is authorized to ask for such personal information over the phone. Many of the victims claim they thought the caller was legit because he/she knew their names already and room numbers, so people are being fooled quite convincingly. As far as the news report goes, WDW management has posted advisories next to phones at all hotels on property advising guests of this scam and to protect themselves and report any such attempts to police and security asap if they happen to them.

So... if you are staying on property (or anywhere for that matter)... HEADS UP! and protect yourself against credit card identity theft.

Since the front desk already has your credit card...well, I'd be suspicious immediately.

Still, better to get the word out, so good to say something.

Yeah that's what I thought, sounds like a CM is in on it.

I've had my avatar since '05... sadly it has become a permanent memorial tribute.

Re: WATCH OUT for SCAM at WDW!!!

This really is very strange because when someone calls a hotel room at a Disney resort, the operator asks for the last name of the guest for security reasons. This happened to me this very past weekend.

In any case, it's a good thing that the credit card companies will protect cardholders from unauthorized charges.

I have a feeling that the culprit will be caught sooner or later.

You think when people hear this they will be even more confused about the Year of a Million Dreams and less willing to accept the real prizes?

Exactly the general public often does things without realizing it is a scam. Especially if it sounds good and is also convincing.

They don't realize that the hotel has their credit card on file.

Interesting. First thing I thought of when reading this is that it sounds like an inside job since the person calling knows your name and room number.

    Stupid criminals.

Re: WATCH OUT for SCAM at WDW!!!

I wondered why there was a sheet by the phone warning about giving information over the telephone. I was like, "uh why would someone call my room and ask for a credit card and why would I ever give it to them". Apparently though the sheet has merit.

Is it possible at all to call a room directly from the outside or on property? Isn't there a direct number assigned to each phone? Since I don't use the phone in the room all that much, I can't remember for sure. But, that would be a way around talking to the front desk to be patched through if you don't know the name of the guest.
