Herbie Day at Disneyland, KTTV Channel 11, 1974 - A YouTube Thread

This is from positively ancient videotapes -

Bob McAllister (of TV's Wonderama and Kids Are People Too) hosts. In the opening, Herbie drives into the original entrance of Disneyland (off Harbor Blvd.) & through the classic parking lot. The 'Mickey Mouse Club' Marching Parade performs in front of the Disneyland train station. Brer Bear, Pluto & Goofy begin a search for Herbie.

Burl Ives & Mickey Mouse reveal AMERICA SINGS.

And so are you, for finding another piece of video there that takes me back to a very special time in my DL relationship. Thank you!!!!

It might be noted that during that summer, Herbie Rides Again was shown across Harbor Boulevard at the now long-gone Fox CinemaLand theaters!

I'm so glad someone finally responded to this thread; I almost thought it was going unappreciated! Thank you Barry!

I very much recall Herbie Rides Again being shown at the Fox CinemaLand theater, because I saw it there! They had a 70s model white VW Bug done up with Herbie's markings sitting outside, too (you walked up a flight of stairs to get to the box office and entrance, and the car was on the landing directly in front of the entrance, as shown in the photo below). I remember being so excited, but even then I knew that it wasn't the "real" Herbie, just a lookalike.

More info on the Cinemaland here: http://www.fromscripttodvd.com/70mm_...cinemaland.htm

I also remember seeing the first King Kong remake here in 1976, and also attending a kid's summer program of movies in the summer of 1977 (including The Cockeyed Cowboys of Calico County, McHale's Navy Joins the Air Force, Eight on the Lam, and The World of Abbott and Costello). After that, I only remember riding past it over the years, wondering what had happened, why it was closed, and wishing someone would reopen it. I had no idea why Disney didn't buy it - it would have made such utter sense for them to have their own theater across the street from the Disneyland entrance. I miss that theater. It was a really nice one in its day.

I sure wish this was on DVD somewhere! This special was so cool from the beginning to the end. I loved how they had a mini-parade in the beginning set to the Mickey Mouse March sung by the Mike Curb Congregation. I was born in 1976 but this special is a great way to see how Disneyland was in the mid-70's. The Main Street Electrical Parade was the perfect ending to the show with the 1st generation look. Kudos to the person who posted the special. The Kids of the Kingdom were great, too. I sure wish we could have KOTK at Disneyland these days.
