July 9, 2009: The Birth of the “E” Ticket

It’s been 50 years since Disneyland’s first summer of the “E” Ticket. The Submarine Voyage, the Matterhorn Bobsleds and the Disneyland-Alweg Monorail all premiered in June 1959. With these attractions, the “E” ticket was born.

Wow, I honestly didn't remember that some of these attractions were E Tickets. I guess it shows how much times, technology and tastes change! Thanks for the article!

It's nice that all of these attractions still around today are free to anyone wishing to ride them. Although some on MiceChat will disagree, I'm very glad for the "passport"-type main ticket we have today.

Nice article. I completely remember the ticket books and how we'd come home with a few of the A's and B's still left over-always thinking we would remember to bring them on the next trip.

Ah, I remember the books. Did you know that a $3.50 book and the $1.00 entry is approximately $46.33 in 2009 monies? That is measuring the worth of the 1956 dollar against the unskilled wage of 2009. Thought that was interesting.

Anyways, I really miss mission to the moon, shame they could not have changed it to Mission to Saturn. That would be amazing!

In some ways, Star Tours is the legitimate successor to Rocket to the Moon, Flight to the Moon, and Mission to Mars.

I don't think that guests today would consider sitting in a circular theater with a round screen on the floor to be amazing, even if the attraction now dealt with Saturn, used updated projection technology, and had other in-theater effects.

Star Tours, which is overdue for a major update, goes way beyond Mission to Mars in telling a story of travel through space.

That's the Grand Canyon Diorama building, which has offices on the outside, within the railroad track loop. The Grand Canyon Diorama was added in 1958.

I've always enjoyed your articles since I think we're about the same age. I have never know there not to be a Disneyland and my first visit Walt very well could have been inside the park. He was my other uncle who came to our home every Sun. It was his park we visited, his dream. Like the leaders to follow he too made mistakes but his errors came from passion not dollars. It's so nice to be able to revist Walt when you write stories about the happiest place on earth. Thank you.

Awesome post Werner! I love the interactive "E" ticket you created. It always amazes me how most of the original "E" ticket attractions are still in place! The early Tiki room tickets are fun (link), Walt was quite the business man! Thanks Warner!!!!

A very timely article, Werner. There's been some discussion on another site about the ticketbooks. Some people remember coming home with many A tickets unused in their books. Not possible, as most books only had 1 A, 2 B, etc. Any way you look at it, there just never were enough E tickets!

Anybody remember the extra tickets you could buy for .75 each? You could use it for anything from A to E, but you weren't getting your money's worth unless you used it on an E attraction.

First of all I have always enjoyed your website. I have a question on The Enchanted Tiki Room. When they offered 75 cents admission to the attraction did CM's collect the money at the turnstile or was there a special ticket that was issued at the old ticket booths or did it have a ticket booth like the one that still stands at Casey Jr Circus Train?
