January 15, 2010: World Clock and Astro-Jets

This week, Yesterland goes back to the Tomorrowland of yesterday when you could figure out the time anywhere on Earth with the World Clock and you could spin around in circles on the Astro-Jets.

Werner,
Do you know if the rocket jet being used a t-shirt shelf in "The Little Green Man' store in Anaheim's Tomorrowland currently is in fact one of the original jets used from 1967? I've heard that it is, but in looking at it, the jet seems mighty small. I'm always looking for remnants of the park that once was.

Great stuff Werner, as usual!!! I certainly think the World Clock (or something like it) would be a better symbol than what we have at the Tomorrowland entrance today.

What happened to World Clock? Is it stored in a dusty warehouse? Or are its remains buried deep within a sanitary landfill? Probably the latter.
Or maybe its going to make an appearance as the entryway to the Parks & Resorts pavilion at the 2010 D23 Expo. Am I getting ahead of myself?

Hum... interesting. I never even knew about this clock. Perhaps I saw it somewhere and it didn't register. That's pretty interesting though... I did not realize that each land had an icon. The sad thing is, this clock was probably destroyed since we well know Disney didn't used to care about preserving artifacts from attractions they were demolishing or documenting these experiences. All they seemed to care about was the next attraction replacing the "old, dated" attraction. Such a shame.

I'm curious to know what happened to the clock as well. Is it in a boneyard somewhere, or did a local business take ownership of it? The world may never know...

Actually, I think I need for you to explain how the clock worked - was there a part that moved to indicate the time? By comparing your 2 photos, it looks like the top part rotated, but I still need a little explanation.

Great articles! The original Astro-Jet mechanism (including the hydraulic rams) were re-used when they moved the the Rocket Jets to the platform above the Peoplemover in 1967. It's also the same mechanism that runs that stupid satellite thing that's currently up on the platform. This info was confirmed by Bob Gurr. Neat stuff!

The Newfies aren't the only people around the world with non-whole hour offsets from GMT/UTC; some other Countries/Locales with odd time zones:

  • Venezuela (UTC-4:30 Hours)
  • Iran (UTC+3:30)
  • Afghanistan (UTC+4:30)
  • Sri Lanka & India (UTC+5:30)
  • Nepal (UTC+5:45)
  • Burma (UTC+6:30)
  • Central Australia (UTC+9:30)
  • The Chatham Islands of New Zealand (UTC+12:45)
  • Tonga (UTC+13:00)
  • Christmas Island (UTC+14)

I suspected that Newfoundland might not be the only place with minutes that don't line up with GMT, but I had no idea there are so many other places.

I'll have to add a few words to the article.
