Oct. 20, 2006: Burning Settler's Cabin

A half century after the opening of Disneyland, the Settler's Cabin is still there, but it's no longer burning.
Link to Burning Settler's Cabin at Yesterland.
What are your thoughts about the No-Longer-Burning Settler's Cabin?

Re: Oct. 20, 2006: Burning Settler's Cabin

OMG - THANK YOU ! ! ! ! People are always asking for pictures of the burning cabin. It is so sad to see it the way it is today after seeing the photos above on Yesterland.

As for why the non-burning cabin. There is very little excuse for it in my mind. Perhaps a lack of appropriate maintenance, or poor management. But neither is a good excuse to my mind.

Great update and question.

Re: Oct. 20, 2006: Burning Settler's Cabin

I have mixed fellings on the issue. Safety wise it was kind of a scary thing. One certainly would not want a fire to break out on the island. But it's these little details about Disneyland that make it so very magical. If they didn't use actual fire they should at least spring for a similarly convincing effect.

Re: Oct. 20, 2006: Burning Settler's Cabin

It isnt a matter of just "going over and fixing it" From what i was told, the gus pipes on the bottom of the rivers of america are corroded, so they would have to drain the entire river to replace them, and that is not exactly a small project beause the Mark Twain and Comumbia need to be dry docked, the canoes and rafts need to close and fantasmic needs to go dark, just so a few non essential pipes can be replaced.

Don't get me wrong, the had better do it when the drain the river again in, say 5 years or so...

Remember last time they drained the river to clean up fantasmic... why didn't they spend time then? heck, they probably will hope we forget and never fix it... then when they finally figure out the next change to the island remove the pipes.

Are we sure the cabin in WDW is still burning? I was just on the Belle a couple weeks ago, and I don't recall seeing the fire.

Same here. I was excited to see something working on the river and it was not turned on for me either. This was roughly Sept. 27.

Cool Re: Oct. 20, 2006: Burning Settler's Cabin

And they never even got to use the story where it's a fire started by an explosion in the clandestine meth lab.

A bientot.

Heh... THAT would be an interesting story. Great update on that. It seems like it would be a good idea to get that back going again from a mark Twain, Colombia, and Canoes (though would you have time to look?) perspective.

Good job Werner. I saw in the second to last picture, I believe it was second to last, that the house now seems to be shrouded with trees all over it. Is that how it is today?

It could have been the heat lamps that set the BC bud ablaze. The old settler had himself a narcotic campfire.

The picture of the in the Burning Settler's Cabin at WDW in my new Yesterland entry is from October 2004. I haven't been of the Liberty Belle or the WDW Railroad since then.

I haven't heard or read anything since then that would lead me to believe that the Burning Settler's Cabin at WDW is no longer burning. It would be easy for a guest to miss the Settler's Cabin at WDW entirely, if that guest is on the other side of the Liberty Belle looking back at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

If anyone reading this thread has seen the Settler's Cabin at WDW recently, please post whether it is burning or not.
