This week, I've added a new page to Yesterland, and I've updated one of the most popular Yesterland pages with several new photos.
Link to Homages to the House of the Future (new)
Link to Monsanto House of the Future (updated)
Please discuss the House of the Future here.

Wonderful Updates as usual! I want to bring to your attention that in your homage to the House of the Future you didn't mention that clips of it show up on the screen in innoventions right before you go in! That might be something to add when you update it again! Great Job!

It would have been nice to see the inside back then, as well the areas behind it compared to todays appearance.
I have the model mentioned and it doesn't look as great as the real one though.
Thanks Werner.

I always enjoy your site, but can you include picture of the interior?

Thank you for letting me know. I never caught the House of the Future on the video before entering Innoventions at Disneyland. (I've only been in Disneyland's Innoventions twice.)

Do all guests see the same video before entering? Or is there a different video depending upon which section of Innoventions a guest will be entering?

I wish I had an interior photo. Unfortunately, nobody has sent an interior photo to me. And copyright considerations prevent me from scanning a printed image or just grabbing a photo from another website.

There's a good interior photo at http://www.plasticliving.com/hotf/f.html

Re: Jan. 26, 2007: Homages to the House of the Future

I first visited Disneyland in 1963, as a third grader. I was amazed by and fell in love with the place. The Tiki Room was 'da bomb. Audio animatronics!
I loved most every attraction, and we did them all and repeated many, ticket books be damned!
The one attraction that didn't seem up to par with the others was the House of the future. Outside it had a nice modern look, but the inside wasn't as satisfying.
The big 'x' design meant all the rooms were somewhat narrow which gave it all a cramped feel. Most of the walls had floor to ceiling windows, but rather than open up the cramped spaces, it gave it all a fishbowl feel. All of the furnishings were plastic and I kept thinking what a wretched space it would be to live in.
The line moved very slowly, yet there was really very little to see.
I don't remember if it was self guided or not.
Too bad Walt didn't get ahold of one of Bucky Fuller's Dymaxion house kits, and exhibit a real life home of the future

Well, there are three video screens on each platform you enter on. Yes, it does show the same movie. There, Tom Morrow talks about some zany old inventions from the 1950's and 60's. There he mentions the all plastic house and there House of the Future shows up. Then he continues to welcome you into Innoventions. Hope this helps!

Re: Jan. 26, 2007: Homages to the House of the Future

Not only was it self-guided, but it was a single-file line so if someone wanted to stop, point out something to the person next to them, it would bring the whole line to a dead halt.

It was a small house, and everybody (children included) knew it was just showing off GE's new technologies and that people were going to have to live in a bigger house than that.

Re: Jan. 26, 2007: Homages to the House of the Future

There are also homages to the House of the Future aimed at a younger generation. In Disney's Virtual Magic Kingdom (VMK), there is an Autopia Off Road on Mars room that has familiar homes in the background:

There is also an homage to Adventures Thru Inner Space:

Re: Jan. 26, 2007: Homages to the House of the Future

Excellent update Werner, unfortunately I was never able to visit this attraction but I remember reading about it in one of my father's old Disneyland Yearbooks from that era when I was a child and before the Internet exploded.

Before VMK opened Tomorrowland I remember they had a splash screen that stated basically coming soon and they had a lot of little Homes of the Future displayed there as a small space-suburban community.

Now if only they would bring the Innoventions house to the West Coast version...

Great updates... but FYI - DisneyShopping no longer has any House of the Future figures left!

Thank you.

I just checked. The House of the Future Illuminated Replica still shows as in stock.

For a minute, I thought that the Yesterland article caused DisneyShopping to sell out the remaining inventory.

When I wrote the article (a week before I posted it), the price was $79. When I was ready to upload the article, I checked again. The price had dropped to $59, so I had to do a new screen capture.
