I get a belly tickle when I see pics of the 1967 version of that stage. It was in the late 60's that I would spend hours at that stage, catching every set I could of whatever band was playing. I was too young for nightclubs, so this was the only live music other than church music that I'd ever seen, and it was incredibly cool!

And I've always felt that the "Lightyear's" was nothing but a boo-boo by a sign maker. The fact that it remained for so long, uncorrected, was another sign that DL was in terrible hands throughout much of the 90's and early 00's.

I agree, the original was best. Even the current version, which is a big improvement over the last two, isn't quite as good. But I guess we shouldn't complain.

Wasn't the original a Rolly Crump design?

Thanks for mentioning Rolly Crump HBG2. Yes, it is his design. ...and it is awesome. I'm glad to see a touch of his vision brought back to the TT.

Wow, I'm gonna sound like a dork for admitting this, but I had no idea that stage/planter went up and down!! I've never seen it in operation, so this was a real revelation to me!

Great job Werner. It's amazing to see how a graphic, well thought out design can slowly degenerate into a series of giant styrofoam cake decorations. How did we go from "Eero Saarinen meets Charles Eames", to "Playschool meets Jar Jar Binks"?

I was walking by TT yesterday. Those plastic ferns in the planters on top of the bandstand look so lame. Somtimes I don't think people at Disney understand or appreciate Walt's contribution to the history of modern design. It was cool to see the old Rocket Jets memorialized in "Meet the Robinsons".

Tomorrowland 67 was such a sincere effort. You can see really that they were serious about the future, and still made it fun. I miss it so much.

You raise a good point. The 67 TL (and, I would add, the NY World's Fair of 64-65) was a climactic expression of can-do optimism, of enthusiasm for the great big beautiful tomorrow everyone expected. It was a product of its time, and it isn't Disney's fault that they can't single-handedly resurrect that cultural moment for us.

Tomorrowland will always be the toughest land to pull off, since it has to play off of peoples' expectations for the future. If people are more cynical, well, what do you do?

I think we are living in the most exciting of times. Tomorrowland could be absolutely amazing if only someone had the guts to go out there and do one. One way to beat expectation is to call on the people that consistently beat them. I'd do a brainstorming session with Steve Jobs, Richard Branson, James Cameron, Zaha Hadid, and maybe Dean Kamen. I think there would be one 3D,segwayed,ihome of the future, virgin space mountain of a Tomorrowland that we could line up for.

All we have right now is WDI working to integrate a bunch of dead beat sponsors.
