February 26, 2010: The News from Disney’s Aulani

Aloha! It's been three months since I last reported about the new Disney resort under construction at Ko Olina in Hawaii. Today I have recent construction photos (February 21, 2010).

    Please discuss it here.

I go to Ko'Olina once a year and stay at the Marriott Ko'Olina Beach Club. Right now it is a pretty quiet area. I am curious, with the beach club being at the other end, how Disney's resort is going to affect the number of people in the lagoons closer to the beach club. I will sit and wait until next year!

The Disney resort is at Lagoon 1, the largest of the four man-made lagoons and the one with the best reputation for snorkeling.

My guess is that the number of Disney Aulani guests who walk all the way to Lagoons 3 and 4 down by Marriott's Ko Olina Beach Club timeshare resort just to use a different lagoon will be minimal.

There is a large, undeveloped resort site directly adjacent to Marriott's Ko Olina Beach Club. When that site is developed, there will be more people at Lagoon 3.

Also, Marriott's Ko Olina Beach Club will eventually have four buildings. Only 2 1/2 building are open so far. When the entire resort is built out, there will be some more people at Lagoon 3. The fourth building will be closer to Lagoon 4.

Growth is inevitable at the Ko Olina Resort. But it will never be like Waikiki.

I stay as far away from Waikiki as possible. I like taking H1 west to Ko'Olina from the airport while most traffic goes east.

I would assume the construction site was shut down today as a precaution. If so, any work scheduled for today did not happen. (I don't know much work is scheduled on Saturdays.) I assume they can recover from a one-day construction site shutdown.

As I'm posting this note, there is not yet an "all clear" of the tsunami warning, but it appears that Hawaii escaped without damage.
