June 10, 2011: Aulani and Pearl Harbor

New photos of Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa in Ko Olina, Hawai‘i.

And advice about visiting Pearl Harbor.

    Please discuss it here.

Thanks for the side visit to Pearl Harbor. I didn't know the Missouri was also there. I remember as a kid when the Missouri was decommissioned somewhere on the east coast and it had a reenactment of the Japanese surrender on the battleship. It was quite interesting to see that as a kid, and I believe I still have the memento from the event in storage. I'd like to get back to the Missouri one day to remember that time as a young boy with my parents on a trip. It's funny how nostalgia works.

Can you spend all day at Pearl Harbor? Well, there are other exhibits nearby. I never went. They cost additional money. You can, of course, take your time in seeing the exhibits. You can read all the materials and see all the footage. You can walk along the site taking it all in. Essentially, 3 hours is all you need, but you can easily make it 6 hours if you include lunch. For myself, 3 hours is sufficient since it is a downer. Not a pleasant reminder of the past. If you return quickly, you can go back and swim at the pool.

I agree that allowing 3 hours is good if the plan is just to take in the new Pearl Harbor museum exhibits, watch the documentary movie, visit the USS Arizona Memorial by boat, and exit through the gift shop. It can be done more quickly if there are immediate tickets available, but it would a shame to miss (or to rush through) the excellent new museum exhibits.

My goal in the article was to make readers aware that Pearl Harbor has even more to offer, including the submarine Bowfin, the battleship Missouri, the Pacific Aviation Museum, and the USS Oklahoma Memorial. I didn't even mention the submarine museum adjacent to the Bowfin or the Waterfront Memorial honoring 52 American submarines and more than 3,500 submariners lost during World War II. I don't think it's possible to see and do everything in 8 hours, especially because many of these locations require timed shuttle tickets.
