Exactly one month to go! August 29 is opening day of Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, Ko Olina, Hawai‘i.

Thanks for the photos and info. My wife wants to go Feb. 2013, which means I won't even book until next year. My biggest worry is airfare. With prices above $600 now, what is going to be like in a year?

I really enjoyed this article! The resort looks very nice. Also, I have a lot of family in Oahu that I stay with often, and I recently became vegan, so it's nice to know there's a store nearby that has good vegetarian and vegan food for the next time I visit.

Did they change the look of the volcano? It looks darker now. Anyway, I found it funny that you referred to the old volcanic rock outcropping as not volcanic. Then maybe it is merely rock outcropping.

From looking at your photograph at Diamond Head State Monument, I realized there could be other colors. I pulled some old photos that showed a silver color. From close inspection, I realized the silver color is actually faded black lava rock. The brown is merely the dirt mixed with the faded black lava rock. This is my observation.

The volcanic rock outcropping is still brown, and it looks the same to me. If it looks different to you, perhaps it's the angle, the time of day, or the lighting.

I never wrote that it's "not volcanic." I wrote that it's not a volcano. Not every chunk of volcanic rock is a volcano—and this Disney creation is definitely not meant to be a volcano.

Incidentally Carnival Cruises has already figured out how to stop in Hawaii. They do a cruise starting in Ensenada and ending in Honolulu, then do another cruise from Honolulu to Vancouver, and that's how they move their ship up to Alaska. They even arrange luxury motorcoaches to pick up passengers from their normal cruise terminal in Long Beach and take them down to Ensenada to board the ship. So there definitely is a way if Disney wants to...
