The 50 "famous names" of original Main Street USA

I have little faith that this will be discussed or answered (the board sees very little activity, and threads are locked or deleted with depressing regularity) but according to the Wizard of Bras page, it mentions this little tidbit:

The Wonderful Wizard highlights the Hollywood-Maxwell display which is one of fifty “famous names in American business” selected by Disneyland officials to populate Main Street, U.S.A., an exact replica of an American town of the 1890-1910 period.
We know a few of those names: Sunkist, Carnation, and Upjohn were others, but does anyone have a list?

Interesting. Maybe this will be a start for you...

Thanks! That's really cool, probably what I was looking for. I of course feel like all 50 didn't each sponsor a store but probably were involved and were visible somehow in the original Main Street USA (even if they faded away over the years).

As I said, it is a start. Maybe if anyone with some DLR background looks at the diagram it might trigger some memories of other "famous names" that used to be associated with Main Street.

Now that I thi about it, there are many "new" names on those windows, including Disney contributors from the 80s, 90s and 00s. What names were in their spots before they were added? Anyone have any old pics of the windows of Main Street?

I think that refers to the approximately 50 companies who were solicited, but not all responded.

Here's another...The Yale Lock Shop, sponsored by Yale & Towne Mfg. Co. My father, W.K. McGreevy, was West Coast Manager during construction of Disneyland. We lived on Ohio St., Anaheim during that time. Check out the locks on all the buildings there...The Yale locks are still there, most notably on Main Street, but also throughout the park.

How awesome! If you have any family pics/memorabilia you could share I know we would appreciate it very much.

The Yale Lock Shop displayed artifacts regarding the history of locks, as well as items to purchase, such as a watch pendant in the shape of a padlock, tie clips, cuff links, etc. We moved back east again and didn't return until I was in 2nd grade. We then called Fremont, CA home and our family made the trip every summer to check in on the shop and for we three kids to explore Disneyland, accompanied by a cast member guide, while Dad conducted business. I still visit when able, now living in Riverside County. Our daughter has enjoyed annual ticket access and now "lives" at Disneyland with our five yr. old grandson and son-in-law. To the right of the shop is Kodak, then to the left, an unknown shop, then our childhood favorite on the corner, the General Store.

FYI....According to the original (1st edition) Disneyland Guidebook, the opening day attractions were these: (additional Corporate vendor information added, also, in red.)

Disneyland Street Railway (the horse-drawn trolleys on Main Street)
Disneyland Fire Department (that fire wagon in the fire house was a ride up and down Main Street)
Disneyland Penny Arcade and Shooting Gallery: The first Guidebook lists the following: "A fun packed collection of games, amusements and Americana, and tests of skill and marksmanship at the .22 caliber shooting gallery."
    Main Street Cinema
Explorer's Boat Ride (now the Jungle Cruise)
Log Fort and Block Houses, Mark Twain River Boat
    Painted Desert (Stage Coach Ride)
Conestoga Wagons (through the Painted Desert)
Davy Crockett Museum (then the Mercantile)
Sleeping Beauty Castle (the walk-through wasn't open yet)
    Peter Pan
Casey Jr (although not operational on opening day)
    Mr. Toad's Wild Ride
    Snow White Ride-Thru
Mickey Mouse Theatre (also not operational opening day)
    King Arthur Carousel
    Mad Tea Party
    Dumbo
Canal Boats of the World (now Storybook Land Canal Boats)
    Clock of the World
    Space Station X-1
    Speedboats (later Phantom Boats)
    Autopia
    Spaceport
Rocket to the Moon (the Moonliner from TWA)
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Exhibit (sets and effects from the film)

The Corset Shop on Main Street from Hollywood-Maxwell, the Yale & Towne Lock Shop, the Bone Carvers in Frontierland, the Red Wagon Inn On the Plaza by Swift, Co., the Aunt Jemima Pancake House from Quaker Oats, the Welch's Grape Juice Beverage stand in Fantasyland.

Cool! (sorry I wasn't able to respond to the PM...forgot my password for a moment there)

I kind of wish they had kept up the "original" themes to Main Street USA and not let the sponsors "expire"...or at the very least, replace them with new ones. Sure, Hollywood-Maxwell is pretty much irrelevant these days, but the Sunkist Citrus House? That...should've been kept.
