I am very interrested in what Bear Country/ Critter Country looked like before the Splash Mountain ride. How did the elevated train look? Someone mentioned a snoring bear... does anyone have pics of this?

As to the recent post about TRIBUTES to older rides in newer ones... I notice that there is a bear snoring sound on Splash Mountain.... coinsidence?

Please... does anyone have any pics of vintage Bear Country?

The sleeping bear is right before the first drop. It used to be heard in the queue area of The Country Bears show, I believe.

The snoring bear was an audio file cut out from the Snow White film. Eventually Disney said it was Rufus from the Country Bears snoring. The audio file is included on the 6 Disc set "The Musical History of Disneyland." .

I remember when Splash Mtn. was being built. It's so weird to think of it not being there!

The snoring bear was dedicated to Rufus but guests were real confused so they put the Brer Bear mail box next to the door. I guess you can say it's still a tribute.

when Bear Country first opened, the area where splash mountain is was just a big wooded hill. as you walked along this path to bear country you could hear the sound of the bear snoring at that time the sound wasn't any particular character. Later, when they added the country bear christmas and holiday shows, they paid homage to the snoring bear by having a new character "Rufus" in the show. Rufus was always asleep, and needed to be awakened to fix lights, etc.

When they put in splash, the sound effect of the bear snoring, was incorporated into splash.

Didn't Disney have a weekend-long party to celebrate SM's opening?

To go way back - originally, there was a live Indian Village where Splash Mountain is now. You could watch performances of traditional dances and learn about the history and crafts of different tribes. As a child, I found it wonderful.

There is/was no Country Bear named Rufus. Rufus was a bear in his own right.

Oh yes there is/was. He wasn't in the original Country Bear Jamboree, but in the Christmas show and the Vacation Hoedown, Rufus is heard from the back of the auditorium as the inept (and sleepy) stage manager.

Bear Country opened in 1972, along with the Country Bear Jamboree. It was, as Lynn pointed out, previously the Indian Village.

The bear in the cave was called Rufus long before the Christmas or Hoedown shows ever came into existance at the Jamboree. So it's more likely that the Rufus in those shows was named after the bear in the cave outside.
As a kid, the snoring bear was much better than any animatronic could have been, since it made me *imagine* the bear, deep in his cave. He was a great (and cheap) effect, added to a space where not much else was going on.

The snoring bear had me fooled as a kid. I really thought the bears lived in the cave. To be 4 again......
