Thanks for the info! I had heard of Liberty Street, but didn't put 2 and 2 together.

Great article as usual Werner, thanks for sharing!

I'm wondering, in one picture one train was passing the other near Main St. station. I never see that happen! Of all the times I've stood in line for the train I've just assumed they've always run the trains one at a station. (Am I making any sense?) Was this by-passing done in the early days? Or was that picture from a special occasion?

I always wondered why there were two sets of tracks up there...

Please take another look at the article.

In the earliest years, there were two trains and two stations. The Passenger Train departed only from the Main Street Station. The Freight Train departed only from the Frontierland Station. Both made complete trips around Disneyland, without stopping at the other station. So it was common for the trains to pass each other.

There were passing sidings at Frontierland and Main Street stations.

When the passenger train was loading at Main Street, the switch track would be thrown, and the freight train would pass by, as seen in the photo in Werner's article. After the freight train went by, the passenger train would depart Main Street.

As the passenger train approached Frontierland Station, the freight train would already be stopped there, unloading and loading passengers. The switch at Frontierland Station would be thrown, and the passenger train would be diverted onto the pasing siding, and steam on around the freight train.

The trains would "leapfropg" each other at Main Street and Frontierland for a number of years--until the arrival of the Fred Gurley and the Excursion cars made the operation unworkable.

The yellow cars look just our local rail road. The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge.

They're similar, but the Durango & Silverton's have the taller windows with the sash. The SF&D cars have relatively square windows, sans sash.
