    Original Sleeping Beauty Walk-thru PICTURE

As far as I know, there is only one professional photo in existence showing a scene from the original Eyvind Earle/Ken Anderson designed Sleeping Beauty Diorama (the "walk-through"). Threads inquiring about this lost classic appear with some regularity around here.

The one picture is a View Master shot. I can't scan those, but someone I knew could, and he did it for me, so here's a big shout-out to "gordonfree" for doing this.

    Here's the shot:

For interesting comparison, here's the Eyvind Earle concept art for that scene:

If you're adept at doing the "Magic Eye" crossed-eyed reading that will give you a 3-D image, here it is in two sizes.

Practice with this, if you're trying to do the "Magic Eye" viewing for the first time. Let your eyes go out of focus until the two images pop together.

Ken Anderson probably used a "Pepper's Ghost" effect (reflected off a tilted sheet of glass) to get that wonderful effect of light particles floating in mid-air. The look of these painted flats is much more admired today than in the 70's, when these dioramas were replaced with an inferior "barbie-doll" version.

    Stunning! Wonderful discovery!

That is amazing! I really like the real thing better than the concept art. Thank you and gordonfree! It would be amazing to see this back. I hope they do it, and do it right.

I used to have this shot on a viewmaster reel, but the slide fell out. You have no idea how long I've been waiting for someone to scan and post this scene.

    Thank you, thank you!

Don't you hate that? I'm missing one side of one scene from the third Sleeping Beauty reel. It's with Prince Phillip riding Sampson to escape Maleficent's Castle. You have to completely skip that slide if you don't want to be blinded by the bright white light of missing scenes.

Another archaic Sleeping Beauty item for y'all.

In this post on a much earlier SB walk-thru thread, Neverlandtink tells a fascinating mini-story about how they still have the boxes with Maleficent's goons in them, at WDI in Glendale:

    Sleeping Beauty Walk Through

Those goons are one of my very oldest memories of DL. There were dungeon-like doors with peepholes that allowed you to look in and see the goons. This feature of the walk-thru was discontinued very early, no later than the mid-sixties. I don't know why. Perhaps it caused a bottleneck in the hallway.

Anyway, some great Ken Anderson artwork for those doorways was published in Kurii and Gordon, Art of Disneyland (2005). This is not "concept art" but was intended to be used as color guides, apparently. So, with the ViewMaster shot, these may be as close as you can get to seeing what was in the classic SB walk-thru, back in the day.

Another great find, HBG2! Thanks for that! I really appreciate all of these images that you are posting and sharing with us! This was my favorite attraction. It's so fascinating to look at all of your finds! Thank you!

My pleasure! By the way, if you're a SB fan, check out a blog called Animation Backgrounds if you haven't already discovered it. Click on "Sleeping Beauty" in the right side column. What you'll get is a whole bunch of Eyvind Earle background paintings from the SB movie. It's a great blog.

Here are the original VM pair as big as I can get them, and unaltered in any way, so you can do with them as you please:

*Sigh* It is such a pleasure to finally see these slides!

As beautiful as they are, they still can't convey the full effect of this scene in the walk-through.

I remember seeing the goons through the peepholes, too.

Re: Original Sleeping Beauty Walk-thru PICTURE

In celebration of the reported reopening of the SB walk-thru (and even better, in celebration of the fact that it will supposedly harken back to the style of the original), here's another extremely scarce picture from that original. In the Letters section of E-ticket magazine (#14, Winter 92-93), someone published a photo of a couple of the peep-hole goons.

Well, I meant pictures of the goons from the actual walk-through. Here's my crude picture of the goons I was talking about from E-Ticket #14:

I thought my picture was really bad, but I guess this is the only picture out there of the goons. This picture might show a little more detail than HBG2's, but it's still a bad picture.
