Fifteen, and Counting (continued)
But how are things going behind those walls? Quickly it appears. Palm trees keep being added to the Aladdin’s Magic Carpet area... ...the murals for Cars and Crush are nearly finished...
...the Crush interiors are in place as well, and even the first tests of the Crush coaster vehicle have started as you can see in a video linked here. (95% of Crush's ride is inside the ride building, the vehicle exits only for a few seconds at the start, which is the short sequence you can see on the video.) The Imagineers have finished much of the sculpting of the Cars ride decor, like Luigi (below) which will be in place in the attraction. Imagineer Beth Clapperton poses with the Crush ride vehicle (below). There are still two major projects in the works to finally finish the Toon Studios placemaking effort. One is the repainting of the Studio 3 Animagique facade in blue, the new scaffoldings now in place indicates a quick start on that...
...and last is the tearing out of the current walkways. They are all to be replaced with big color plaques in time for the June 10th opening. Meanwhile at the other end of the Production Courtyard, Tower of Terror's exterior painting continues. All this is good, but for me it’s all the placemaking going on that's the most interesting. As you can see on this map below (courtesy of the excellent French Disneyland Paris web site: www.dlrp.fr) they are planning to build new facades in several areas, as everyone felt was needed from day one at this park: A new boulevard look will be created. A facade (here a studio set-like false front, with nothing behind it) will be built alongside the Animation building, hiding the queue line. Look for false shop fronts, with an entrance door and a clock on the first floor (#1 on the map). Then another building facade will create a corner with a little path, (#2 on the map) and another one near the Tower of Terror, right in front of it.
At #4 on the map, another Mediterranean-style facade will be built with right and left towers. In the #3 area, a huge facade will give visitors the optical illusion that this boulevard is longer than it actually is. The first one will be placed in front of the tram tour station and will look like a tunnel and the other one behind will represent the Hollywood Hills, so the visitor feels that they have to go through the tunnel to arrive in Hollywood. All this should probably be finished by the end of this year. |
