After months of closure, and several reopening delays, one of the major movie theater chains is having its moment. AMC, the world’s largest theater chain, will be reopening more than 100 theaters starting next week (on August 20) with massive discounts to celebrate its centennial birthday by charging 1920 prices – movies for 15 cents!. One of the locations set to reopen next week is at Walt Disney World’s Disney Springs.
The entire movie industry has been on pause since March, production halted, releases delayed, and theaters closed. However, AMC has decided it’s time to reopen, but with new safety measures. Theaters will be operating with significantly reduced capacity (30% max capacity or less) and requiring social distancing. AMC’s new safety measures also include upgrading ventilation systems and requiring guests and staff to wear masks.
In celebration of AMC’s 100th anniversary, the theater is having a special one-day promotion on August 20 where guests pay what a movie cost back in 1920: 15¢ (plus tax). After the initial opening day, tickets will continue to be discounted at $5. Additionally, many theater concessions will also be marked down to $5.
While there haven’t been any new theatrical releases for current films, AMC will be reopening with a lineup of titles from their library. Films include Black Panther, Beauty and the Beast, Back to the Future, Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back, Grease, and more. However, Disney’s upcoming sci-fi/horror film, The New Mutants will be making its theatrical premiere August 28. AMC has stated that it anticipates roughly two-thirds of its 600+ locations to reopen in time for the premiere of Warner Brother’s Tenent on September 3.
One film that won’t be shown in theaters is Disney’s Mulan which will be shown exclusively on Disney+. For more about how to watch Mulan, read the article below.
