We’ll be setting the Wizarding World of Harry Potter on fire today, literally. But never fear, there’s plenty of Butterbeer to put it all out. Universal Studios Hollywood has enhanced their blockbuster land with new spells, wizarding wear, and even new Butterbeer ice cream. We also see signs of things to come, Halloween and what looks like a long-awaited new ride. “Alohomora,” let’s unlock the secrets of this update.

It’s a Butterbeer World
There are folks who buy an annual pass to Universal just for the Butterbeer. I’ll admit the butterscotch flavored confection of a drink plays heavily into the equation for me as well. And to ensure that folks don’t tire of the same old thing, Universal has expanded the lineup over the years with Cold, Frozen, and Hot Butterbeer . . . as well as Butterbeer fudge and Butterbeer Potted Cream (which is awesome). Now there’s a new option: Butterbeer Ice Cream.

And then there’s the new Butterbeer Ice Cream . . .

While some will like this one, it left me unsatisfied. It’s a pre-packaged product, so it lacks the creamy texture of a soft-serve or even hand-scooped ice cream. But for a quick frozen treat on a hot day, you can pick one up at several of the carts in the land as well as at the Three Broomsticks. Bring us Butterbeer soft serve and I’ll be a happy wizard.
New Wand Experiences
Uni has also increased the number of interactive wand experiences in the Wizarding World. Guests can now cause fire to shoot from a rooftop chimney and unlock a sophisticated door (which apparently holds back a dragon). As before, the spells must be accurately cast to work, but this time around they also have levels of success. Cast the Incendio spell with a half-hearted attempt and you might just see a little flicker from atop one of the buildings, But do it just right, and flames will erupt! Similarly, the new “Alohomora” unlocking spell allows has a range of mechanical effects on the latches, levers, and gears. But doing too well can nearly release a fire-breathing dragon!

First, you’ll need to select a wand at Ollivanders.

Then head out into the clocktower square between the Owl Post and Platform 9¾ where both of the new wand experiences are located.

The spell is particularly difficult to cast. But get it right and the gears begin to spin.

My favorite is the Incendio spell. Seeing flame shooting out of a chimney is fun for the caster and also for any spectators.

Gladrags
A few new items have popped up in the wizarding store, Gladrags. Hermione Granger’s Yule Ball dress is available in ladies and children’s sizes. Severus Snape’s robe is also available in a variety of sizes.

Harry and Ron’s hand-knitted sweaters are now available in children’s sizes as well.

I’ve never really looked closely at the merchandise in this shop, but you’ll find all sorts of interesting things tucked away in little shelves and in corners that you might not think to explore.
Which house are you? You tell me yours and I’ll tell you mine . . . in the comments below.

The Nighttime Lights of Hogwarts Castle has also returned for Summer on select nights, with the addition of a spot or two of pyro. It’s a short, but fun little show that runs multiple times each night.
Halloween Horror Nights
It’s hard to believe that with all the record heat this summer has brought us that Halloween is just around the corner. A few of the details of Halloween Horror Nights have been revealed. Among them are mazes based upon “The First Purge,” the first season of “Stranger Things,” and cult classic “Trick ‘r Treat.” We also hear that Trick ‘r Treat may include a scare zone as well.

New Construction
The Globe Theater and some of the facades of Baker Street are being removed to make way for a rumored Secret Life of Pets attraction.

This and That
The Starbucks has Universal themed mugs that I hadn’t noticed before (but I’m pretty sure they’ve been here since the store opened).

Mr. Ping’s Noodle Shop has returned to the central plaza (in a new spot).

One side of the booth allows you to interact with Mr. Ping. The other side serves noodles and other Chinese food.

Jurassic World Store. One of the two Potter stores off the entry plaza was converted to sell Jurassic World merchandise. The Jurassic Park ride will close at the end of summer to be upgraded and redressed for Jurassic World as well. More on that soon.

There was a little band playing near the entry plaza, and they were pretty good. Although, they are just street-mosphere entertainment for these spots, they can crowd entrances and exits as most guests are in a hurry to get in or out of the park.

Kung Fu Panda in the Dreamworks Theater is a fun little diversion. Interestingly, it doesn’t seem to be pulling huge crowds. But it’s worth a visit to see the new thing and enjoy the air conditioning.

Enter the fog . . .

As I entered the park, I noticed that much of the ticket plaza had misters installed in the trees, which created a huge foggy cloud. These misters are installed throughout the park as well.

That’s a wrap for now. I need to get back to the park soon to ride Jurassic Park and check out the Halloween Horror Nights construction on the Lower Lot for you. So, stay tuned!
