The cool 90° temps, bright green leaves, and tourists in shorts means that it’s now the fall season at the Disneyland Resort. Well, that’s what you might think if you visit any of the shops at the Disneyland Resort this week. Halloween has been moving into stores throughout the Resort. Merchandise in many of the shops now feature pumpkins, Haunted Mansion, and Jack Skellington. And an ambitious roll-out of Halloween foods is also set to launch by September 7th. Add ride refurbishments, major construction projects, churros, churros, churros, and Star Wars land and you have today’s update from Disneyland.
Haunted Mansion Conversion
There’s a little extra going on at the Haunted Mansion Holiday installation this year. Construction walls are up along the main pathways outside the attraction and some obstructions will be removed. The mansion is on the road to Star Wars Land and this area could get even more congested come next spring. And those Fastpass scanners and return queue are located in one of the resort’s most uncomfortable pinch-points. Sadly, they aren’t being removed.
A quick look at the site shows that the lawn has been ripped out (it will be back) and pumpkins and candles are prepped for exterior install.
A giant black widow is set to terrorize this year’s gingerbread mansion in the ballroom.
Halloween Merch
The stores are ready to serve you up some not so scary holiday cheer. But how many people buy this stuff in August?
The merchandise in Frontierland looks a lot like the stuff we showed you on Friday from DCA and Downtown Disney.
In Tomorrowland, mannequins display some family Halloween costume ideas. The force is meh with this family.
But then there’s the stuff like everywhere else.
And on Main Street, there’s more of the same . . .
And they are still setting up the swap meet on Main Street, but they’ve cleaned the table up a bit since last week.
Disneyana still has the Hatbox Ghost plush and the AP shirts. The wooden tray has sold out.

Adventureland Construction
The Adventureland project takes up a huge space on the far east end of the land. The redo of Aladdin’s Oasis also has the Tiki Room down for improvements. The good news is that the ugly lift at the west end of the tiki garden, exit walkway and stairs will all be removed to make way for more interior space. The attraction will exit out to a common walkway into the new Tropical Hideaway. The two tight Tiki Room bathrooms will be replaced with a single disabled-access unisex bathroom.
The Dole Whip stand remains open on both sides for now and continues to draw long lines.
Pirates – Hold the Ticket
After installing the infrastructure for Pirates Fastpass/Maxpass, Disney is finally thinking the situation through. While they are busy removing planters and obstructions throughout the resort to ease traffic congestion in preparation for Star Wars land, they continue to plug up New Orleans Square with overflow queues in public walkways and sitting areas. Thankfully, the Pirates Fastpass remains on hold for now. We can only pray that they’ll do the same with the Haunted Mansion machines.
Speaking of obstructions. The park is busy removing some of the elevated viewing platforms in the area to ease congestion. They were added when the area was rebuilt for Fantasmic. And while they help provide better views during the show, they obstruct the flow of traffic when huge Pirates and Mansion lines choke off the flow of guests through the area during the busy seasons. It is still unclear to me how this will make things better for either Fantasmic or daytime crowd control . . . but we shall see.
Star Wars Construction
This week’s Star Wars construction photos are from on high. I played Tarzan for you to get the overview. Then I hopped aboard the soon to be refurbished Mark Twain (although the top deck was closed).
Now to the Mark Twain. They’ve been restricting access to the top deck to only when there are lots of guests. One cast member said it was to help get folks on and off the boat quicker and another said it was to make it more difficult for guests to get Star Wars construction photos. And it’s true . . . from the middle deck, it is very hard to see many of the details in the land that we’ve already documented.
While taking a swing through ToonTown, I noticed something sticking out of the Star Wars rocks . . . yes, that appears to be a strange little tree. . .
Refurbishments
Matterhorn is closed for an undisclosed period of time. Substantial work is being done to the mountain, including rock work and clearance expansion.
- The Enchanted Tiki Room is closed through mid-September.
- Haunted Mansion is closed through September 6th and will reopen as Haunted Mansion Holiday
- Space Mountain will have a quick closure on Sept. 6 and return the next day as Space Mountain: Ghost Galaxy
- Mickey’s House closes September 2nd and doesn’t have an announced return date.
- The Sailing Ship Columbia will have a brief refurbishment from September 10th through 13th.
- Then the Mark Twain will close from September 17th until an undetermined date.
- There are also some exterior facade refurbishments underway on Main Street.
Around the Park
Flags are flying at half-staff for Senator John McCain.
We are curious about how much of Pixar Fest might remain. Will the Tomorrowland Theater go back to showing Star Wars clips? Will Pizza Port retain its minimal Pizza Planet overlay?
We’d be fine with Pizza Planet sticking around if they’d upgrade the signage and interior decorations.
The Tomorrowland mural we showed you last week has been repainted black. This is likely just a base coat.
More seating removal underway. The seating around the base of the Peoplemover is being removed.
A previous support was altered last year.
Now . . . what about those rocks at the front of the land . . . .
