There’s so much going on at the Disneyland Resort this week that we had to bring you two big updates. Yesterday we shared a comprehensive look at Halloween Time (HERE). Today we have news good and bad. Monorail woes, plastic reduction, construction, garden reductions, and walls, walls, walls.
Monorail Trick and no Treat
The Pixar Fest Wraps will be staying on the Monorails for a bit longer. This is unfortunately due to the paint peeling off of Monorail Blue when the wraps were removed . . . right down to the primer. As of the time of writing, there was no immediate plan on how to resolve the situation, or how to get the wraps off of Red and Orange without damaging their paint as well. Part of why this is such an issue is the original paint has materials in it that can’t be used in California. Disneyland will need to either repaint with something new or ship the train out to be serviced elsewhere. Dude!
Wall-oween
From Main Street USA all the way to the Castle, you’ll find a plethora of walls and construction scrims. Some of it is for refurbishment and some to expand walkways in preparation for Star Wars Land.
The Main Street facade work is cosmetic. But the Cinema is closed during this time. The rest of the shops remain open.
But it’s the construction scrims erected to obscure the lagoons on either side of the Adventureland, Frontierland, Fantasy Faire Village all the way to the western portal of the castle which are the big news this week. The lagoons are being drained and work will soon be underway to expand walkways and shrink waterways and gardens. This is just one of many projects you’ll see in today’s update which are a direct result of expected crowds next year. Gardens, obstructions and seating are being removed throughout the park to make room for more guests when Star Wars land opens.
Fences will be pushed back throughout the area.
While losing gardens and seating is never happy news to share, so far the changes have been mostly minimal to the casual eye. We’ll show you an entire Fantasmic seating area which disappeared this week . . . but you’d be hard pressed to ever know it was there. We hope that’s true here, the green-scape is part of what makes Disneyland lush and park-like.
Star Wars Booze News
Last week we focused on the news that Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge would serve alcohol in a highly themed cantina. There was quite a bit of debate and passionate comments on both sides of the issue. But our reader poll makes it clear that most of you don’t mind having alcoholic beverages sold in the new land.
And here’s how you all voted in our poll on your tolerance level for alcohol at Disneyland.
The Last Straw
We recently reported on Disney’s decision to reduce the use of single-use plastics throughout the company. That change is already taking place. Most establishments throughout the resort have already run out of lids. Straws will be available until they run out as well.
Fire Extinguished
Main Street band, Hook and Ladder, has been given the ax. The group will have their last performance on September 14th.
Bugs Land Exterminated
In the theme of things going away this week. Bugs Land also closed. Construction walls are now up and include a nod to things to come.
Stark Industries has eradicated those pesky bugs.
Construction walls now stretch from Carthay Circle to Tow Mater’s in Cars Land.
The parade route entry to Bugs Land.
The Cars Land entry.
Tangaroa A-Go-A
Another farewell. Tangaroa Terrace is closed for a major transformation. When the restaurant reopens early next year (it could be as early as January), it will be a family lounge. The entire patio area will allow alcohol (the patio is currently divided by stanchions which separate the Trader Sams (bar) side from the restaurant side), and a new bar service station will be added to the patio so guests don’t have to go inside to get a drink.
On a positive note, Dole Whip will be served in this location when it returns. They are also planning to offer an alcoholic version.
The outdoor fire pit is also behind construction scrims.
Tropical Construction
The former Aladdin’s Oasis continues to be reworked into a Tropical Hideaway. Asian inspired cuisine will be served here, including Dole Whip. We don’t know if Dole Whip will be served here in addition to the juice bar on the Tiki Room lanai or instead of.
Speaking of Dole Whip, it is now available for Mobile Order.
Haunted Mansion Area Changes
Haunted Mansion has reopened with its Holiday overlay and construction walls have come down. The planters along the main path toward Critter Country have been removed, making room for Fastpass Return queuing, strollers, and a few benches.
Earlier in the update, I mentioned a Fantasmic seating/standing area which has been removed. Looking at the photo below, you wouldn’t even know what’s missing until you really think about it. Where that DVC cart is was a narrow pathway, it’s now wide open here.
The photo below shows the area where the seating area was removed (the construction walls).
And here’s a closeup of the area from last week before the walls came down.
Tomorrowlanding
There have been some revisions to Tomorrowland as well. Built-in benches surrounding the Peoplemover supports have been removed as well. This is actually interesting news as there had been rumors that the Peopleover tracks would finally be removed later this year.
The mural has returned to the Buzz Lightyear building. Appears to be the same.
Across from that is a painted wall which could use a touch-up as well. Lots of water damage to the paint.
The Pixar Shorts Film Festival was still running in the Tomorrowland Theater. Its counterpart in DCA has closed.
Ghost Galaxy has returned to Space Mountain for the Halloween Season. Fastpass merge has moved to the inside of the mountain (sorry for the lack of photo).
Projectors and speakers have returned for the nightly light show on the mountain.
Another Pixar Fest holdover . . . The Pizza Planet overlay is still up at Pizza Port. But something has me thinking this may be a long-term thing.
New tables have arrived which have the Pizza Planet look.
I’d be happy to see the Pizza Planet decor remain if they upgrade a few more things. . . starting with the sign out front.
Matterhorn
The Matterhorn refurbishment project continues as well. It looks as though the Fastpass and Single Rider lines are being reworked a bit.
The pavement and fences around some of the gardens have been removed from the walkway in front of the ride.
Parking Survey
A reader wrote in to tell us that he had received a Disneyland survey asking about resort parking:
“If available during your recent visit to Disney California Adventure Park, how likely would you have been to pre-purchase a parking voucher using the Disneyland App?”
Offering guests pre-paid parking via app would allow for a few different things: 1) It would help Disney gage how popular parking will be on any given day. 2) It would guarantee parking for a guest during busy parking days. 3) It could allow for dedicated parking entry or dedicated lots for pre-paid customers (sort of like the mobile-order lines at restaurants). We don’t know that Disney will do any of these things, but they are certainly using surveys to judge feasibility.
