I love Halloween because it’s a season of creative scares. The haunt season heightens the feeling of suspense and fear factor of everything, even for simple things like seeing something just out of peripheral vision or a surprise sudden movement. It’s the little things that keep me in the scare-season mentality. And then, there are the things that I do to increase those feelings of unease as well. Right now my newest fascination is an Augmented Reality mobile app, Night Terrors: Bloody Mary
This mobile app, developed by the creator of ‘Paranormal Activity’ Oren Peli, brings to life the wildly popular urban legend of Bloody Mary. The very same that you can supposedly conjure by repeating her name three times in a dark room with a mirror. Mary Tudor was the daughter of King Henry VIII– who was infamous for beheading his queens that were unable to give him a male heir– she became England’s first reigning queen. However, her time in power was fueled by death and bloodshed – aptly earning her the title of “Bloody Mary”.
This experience is best completed alone in a dark room with earphones in, using your phone like a camera lens. As you walk through the room, the world around you is transformed into a portal with frightening creatures and haunting sounds that entirely replaces the mundane world from before. While somewhat similar in approach to other AR games, like Pokemon Go, Night Terrors takes the experience to a new level through the detailed storytelling elements and integration of a more advanced AR utilizing not only the phone’s camera but also the gyroscope.
Night Terrors is a great haunted house experience, without ever needing to leave your own. It lasts about 30 minutes in total and is thoroughly entertaining for its duration. Night Terrors: Bloody Mary is available just in time for Halloween on both Android and iOS.
