Disney first got into the cruise business in 1998, and since then, the line has grown by leaps and bounds, with 8 ships currently sailing around the world and two more on the horizon in the next few years. As part of Disney’s $60B commitment to expand the Disney Experiences portfolio, the unprecedented growth of Disney Cruise Line shows no sign of stopping, with a 13-ship fleet expected by 2031.

How We Got Here: Disney Cruise Line History
Disney’s first ship, the Disney Magic, set sail on her maiden voyage in 1998, followed by Disney Wonder in 1999 (together, they’re the 2,700 guest Magic Class).
They were joined by Disney Dream in 2011 and Disney Fantasy in 2012 (the Dream Class, at 4,000 guests).
Ten years later, in 2022, Disney Cruise Line debuted the larger and more immersive Wish Class (but still approximately 4,000 guests): Disney Wish (2022), Disney Treasure (2024), Disney Destiny (2025), and the upcoming Disney Believe (2027).
A fifth Wish-class ship, Disney Imagination, is scheduled to set sail in spring of 2029. Imagination will be the inaugural ship for Disney Cruise Line Japan operated by Oriental Land Company (OLC), the company that owns and operates Tokyo Disney Resort.

Following the Disney Believe and Disney Imagination will be an all-new class of ships that will be larger than the Magic class but smaller than the Dream and Wish classes. At this point, at least three ships are expected in the new class. Disney hasn’t revealed names, designs, or debut dates yet – we’ll update this guide as details surface.
In a class all by herself is the Disney Adventure. The Global-class ship, acquired during construction from another cruise line, set sail in 2026 from her home port in Singapore.

Ship-By-Ship
All Disney cruise ships feature Disney’s signature rotational dining, kids clubs, character meet-and-greets, exclusive fireworks at sea, and screenings of first-run Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars movies, often on the same day they premiere in theaters on shore.
Many ships also host seasonal Halloween on the High Seas and Very Merrytime Cruises, among other special celebrations and themed sailings.

Disney Imagination (2029)
The 5th ship in the Wish class is expected to be similar to the Disney Wish, with similar onboard dining, entertainment, and immersive experiences. She is expected to set sail in spring of 2029 with a home port in Tokyo.
She’ll be the inaugural ship for Disney Cruise Line Japan, operated by Oriental Land Company – the first time OLC, the company behind Tokyo Disney Resort, has operated a Disney cruise ship.

Disney Magic (1998)

Live musical stage shows include Twice Charmed: An Original Twist on the Cinderella Story.
At 2,700 guests, she’s less than half the size of the 6,700-guest Disney Adventure – proof that the original still has her charms.

Disney Magic also features the AquaDunk (not to be confused with the AquaDuck on Dream and Fantasy), a high-speed adventure that sends brave cruisers plummeting 212 feet, rocketing over the side of the ship before plunging down 3 stories through a twisting tube to an epic splashdown.

Which Ship Is Right for You?
With 8 ships sailing and more on the way, picking the right one can feel overwhelming. Here’s a quick compass heading:
- Your first Disney cruise: The Disney Magic or Disney Wonder deliver the classic Disney Cruise Line experience on a more intimate scale, with 2,700 guests instead of 4,000-plus.
- Sailing from the West Coast: The Disney Wonder sails from San Diego and Vancouver, including Alaska itineraries, and the Disney Magic also calls San Diego home for part of the year.
- The newest thrills: The Wish-class ships bring the AquaMouse water coaster, while the Disney Adventure adds the first-ever roller coaster at sea, Marvel Landing, and San Fransokyo Street.
- Haunted Mansion fans: The Haunted Mansion Parlor sails aboard the Disney Treasure, Disney Destiny, and Disney Believe.
- A short getaway: 3- and 4-night sailings are the sweet spot aboard the Disney Wish, Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy, and Disney Adventure.

Private Island Destinations
Can’t decide which island day you’re hoping for? Castaway Cay is the original Disney private island experience – a full beach day with Disney service, characters in their beachwear, and rentable cabanas. Lookout Cay, which debuted in 2024, leans into Bahamian culture with the Goombay Cultural Center, local artists, and a Junkanoo celebration starring Mickey and friends. Both come with Disney’s signature food and character magic.
Castaway Cay
When ships dock at Castaway Cay in The Bahamas, Disney moves the entire cruise experience ashore, with delicious food, water- and land-based activities, and characters decked out in their beachy best.

The recently-added Mickey & Minnie Cove Cabanas can be rented for the day.

REVIEW CASTAWAY CAY:
Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point
In 2024, Disney Cruise Line debuted a second private island port-of-call, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, which is located on Eleuthera in The Bahamas.

The culture of the Bahamas is showcased at the Goombay Cultural Center, where travelers can participate in special programs and meet local artists and performers. Additional Lookout Cay highlights include the Rush Out Gush Out interactive water play area (featuring two slides, water drums, and fountains) and a lively celebration of the Bahamian Junkanoo festival featuring Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Daisy.

Next MiceChat Adventure: Pacific Coast & Alaska Back-to-Back
Ready to join a MiceChat adventure? In May 2027, we’re heading north aboard the Disney Wonder for two cruises that can be booked separately or combined into one rather spectacular back-to-back trip.
The first leg sails from San Diego to Vancouver May 6 – 10, 2027. Then, without changing ships, the Wonder heads into Alaska from May 10 – 17, visiting the Stikine Icecap, Skagway, Juneau, and Ketchikan before returning to Vancouver.
Do one cruise or do both. Many of us are booking the same stateroom for the full 11-night journey, which means no packing up between sailings.

If you’ve never sailed Alaska, this is a very different Disney cruise experience. The scenery is the main attraction, with mountains, glaciers, wildlife, and historic port towns unfolding right outside the ship.
And traveling with MiceChat adds another layer to the trip. We’ll have our own group activities, plenty of familiar Disney fans to explore with, and a good chance that whoever ends up at your dinner table already understands why you have strong opinions about Pirates of the Caribbean.
Bookings for the MiceChat group are being handled by Teresa Cory at [email protected]. Booking through Teresa is required to receive the group rates and participate in the MiceChat activities.
