Admit it. You’ve got part of a shelf dedicated to books about Disney. You diehards out there might even have a whole shelf or more! They might be theme park related, or dedicated to Walt Disney, or perhaps based on the animated features. I’m sure that a good number of you have some of each category – most of our libraries are a mishmash.

My library is comprised of over 200 books at present, and it grows each month. For me, it began in 1987 with Randy Bright’s book Disneyland: The Inside Story (ghostwritten by Bruce Gordon). I picked it up in the park because I was a "New Hire" at the time and just fascinated with the place, and this seemed a good way to investigate the magic a little better. It helped that the Bright book featured photographs different from the typical hardcover tourist book, too!

I didn’t get hooked right away, though. The late 1990s saw an explosion in theme park books – which was my initial interest – and I only bought park books until I found myself suddenly bitten by a collector’s bug. Not coincidentally, this occurred at the same time as I discovered eBay and developed an "eBaydiction." The vast majority of my library was bought in this fashion, mostly in the eBay category Collectibles: Disneyana: Contemporary (1968-Now): Books.

Many of my books are therefore considered used, but naturally this matters little. The after-market in books is a great place to find bargains, and I have every reason to believe that it’s not too late for you to jump into collecting, too, if you’re so inclined. (We've even included Amazon purchase links after each title that is still in print to help you out.) My complete library list follows this article, but I’ll also provide some "must-have’s" for each category of books:

The Disney Bookshelf Checklist

Books Recently Added to the Collection

There seems to be just no way to keep up with the volume of books on Disney published each month. I'm lucky if I even have time to read everything! Here is a list of my recent additions (presented alphabetically) to my library, with a brief comment added for each:

  • Alchemy of Animation (Don Hahn) - one of the more interesting books out there, to my mind, this large-format softcover takes you into the business of creating an animated feature, and explains the actual process of live-action capture and a million other elements. What does a layout artist do? A rigger? A technical director? You'll find all of that, and a ton more, in just this one volume. CLICK TO BUY

  • Art of Bolt (Mark Cotta Vaz) - like all "Art Of" books, this one revels in concept artwork done long before the CGI is brought to the screen, so expect a lot of oil paintings and the like. CLICK TO BUY

  • Art of Wall-E (Tim Hauser) - a solid entry in the "Art Of" books, this one heaps on the watercolors and concept art, with less of the CGI finished product than other similar books. Expect a great story of the making of the movie in the text itself. CLICK TO BUY

  • Behind the Magic: 50 Years of Disneyland (Karal Ann Marling) - there is almost nothing new in this softcover volume, yet the result is almost cloyingly attractive. This would make a good first book for a Disney collector, or someone with a passing interest in Disney park history. Those with deeper relationships, though, might find it a bit rehashed. CLICK TO BUY

  • Collecting Disneyana (David Longest) - this hardcover is attractively packaged and handsomely illustrated in color, but its main focus is the going rate of your Disney collectible, and the listings are far from complete. It's a fun book to flip through, but only of value for purchasing if you're a completist. CLICK TO BUY

  • Complete Walt Disney World 2009 (Julie and Mike Neal) - the 2008 version of this book, new on the scene for touring guides to WDW, was a sensation. More a keepsake and collectible than something you'd tote about in the parks, the hefty volume was crammed full of imaginative color photography, and did a bang-up job of motivating aspiring tourists before they actually came to the park. It's less certain this weighty tome is ideal for carting about and making decisions, but who cares? If you like WDW, you want this book. CLICK TO BUY

  • Creating Magic: 10 Common Sense Leadership Strategies From a Life at Disney (Lee Cockerell)- written by the consummate insider (how do you get higher than Exec. Vice President of the Magic Kingdom?), this book will take you through decades of history, but it's written in the format of a typical business book, and with the take-home messages of how to be an effective leader. Irresistible to theme park aficionados but likely boring to others. CLICK TO BUY

  • Disneyland Encyclopedia (Chris Strodder) - this hefty softcover attempts to provide info on numerous rides, shows, and shops over the years. It's not entirely complete, and a serious aficionado may well have more information at his fingertips, but this would count as "comprehensive" to a casual fan. CLICK TO BUY

  • Disney Lost and Found (Charles Solomon) - the premise is simple: show off the artwork from features, featurettes, and segments of movies that never made it into full production. It's heavy on images and light on text. CLICK TO BUY

  • Disney Mountains: Imagineering at Its Peak (Jason Surrell) - get this book. Surrell knows what attracts most of us to Disney: the roller-coasters are couched in a fake-world of mountains and theme, and he tackles the biggest of them in this book, replete with numerous photos and concept art you've never seen before. CLICK TO BUY

  • Disney's California Adventure Detective (Kendra Trahan) - if you've seen the Disneyland Detective book, you know what to expect here: hidden characters, trivia on the backstory (or more likely in this park, on the inspiration for the theme park equivalent), and an occasional focus on the hidden details you might not otherwise have noticed. CLICK TO BUY

  • Disney's Countdown to Extinction: A Hologram Adventure to the Age of the Dinosaurs (A.J. Wood) - this very slender hardcover is a kid's book, published in 1998, and focusing more on the dinosaurs than the ride then called Countdown to Extinction. CLICK TO BUY

  • Disney's Dogs (Tamara Khalaf) - a cute, small-format book very heavy on illustrations (and concept art) and short on new information. CLICK TO BUY

  • Disney's Lost Chords, Volume II (Russel Schroeder) - if you liked the first one, you'll like this one too. Most of this large-format hard-cover book is music sheets (do you play piano?), but there are smallish write-ups about all the songs never included into the movies, for one reason or another, and the production values of the book are just so high, it's hard to resist. CLICK TO BUY

  • Disney War (James Stewart) - this in-depth analysis of the corporate structure of Disney circa 2007 is an invaluable historical document, but the hardback is dated. Shortly after it was published, the 'war' was won by Roy Disney, and Michael Eisner was ousted in favor of Bob Iger. The paperback only updates the original a bit, but still, for those of us who have followed along all these years, it's a gripping read. Expect forty times more detail than you'd anticipated. CLICK TO BUY

  • Dream Worlds (Hans Bacher) - this smallish (sideways) hardcover offers a different take on the Disney animated film creation process. Rather than words, the various stages and production requirements are presented in graphic format, via concept art. It's a definite certainty you will find animation art here that you have never seen before, which is saying something in itself. CLICK TO BUY

  • Field Guide to Disney's Animal Kingdom (John Glenn) - this is not a new book (it's from 1998), but it's new to my collection. It's a photo-rich guide to the plants and animals of DAK, with no attention paid to the attractions and rides. CLICK TO BUY

  • Guide to the Magic for Kids (Tim Foster) - this spiral-bound volume is something different: high-quality paper, pages bursting with colored backgrounds and color photos, and a resolutely artistic spirit abound in this volume that cheerfully points out what kids will like in each land, and provides space for interactive recording of the actual encounters. CLICK TO BUY

  • Hassle-Free Walt Disney World Vacation 2009 (Steven Barrett) - the latest in a long series of books that details touring plans (the exact route to take from ride to ride, depending on your preferences and family situation), this book purports to save you time no matter what. To its benefit: it recognizes that different audiences attack the parks in different ways. But is it realistic to assume that the "one day plan for non-early entry days for family with young children" *really* takes into account everything you need to know? CLICK TO BUY

  • Hollywood Cartoons: American Animation in its Golden Age (Michael Barrier) - this is the type of hefty, weighty book sometimes assigned in film classes. Its earnest efforts at historical reality and detail manage to slightly overshadow the (minor) character flaws of dry completeness and comprehensibility. CLICK TO BUY

  • Idea of Nature in Disney Animation (David Whitley) - a purely academic tome that purports to examine the characterization of nature throughout Disney films (as if there was a mysterious cabal behind it all!), this book may be well-suited for academics but few others. CLICK TO BUY

  • Pixar Touch (David Price) - this small hardcover is no picture book (there are only a few black and white images), but it tells the compelling story of Pixar. If you're a fan of the Pixar product - and who isn't? - then I dare you to put this volume down, once begun. It's gripping stuff. CLICK TO BUY

  • Ripley's Legends: Pioneers of the Amusement Park Industry (Tim O'Brien) - detailed histories of the personalities that made amusement park history. More info than you ever knew about the Disney ones, but then there's also a lot about those outside of Disney. CLICK TO BUY

  • So... You're Going to Disney World (Steve Russo) - this slender volume is proof positive that the self-publication revolution can yield products for every taste. I would recommend this book for a very first time visitor, confronting question after question about what to expect, but just about everyone else should steer clear, since it stays so safely general and generic most of the time. CLICK TO BUY

  • Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas (Frank Thompson) - this softcover from 1993 is rich in graphics and equally rich in artistic backstory. Hard to believe the film has just had it's fifteenth anniversary. CLICK TO BUY

  • To Infinity and Beyond (Karen Paik) - this coffee-table book offers ambition missing in the other Pixar book, with much more collectible images and a high-quality feel to the production. Still, it's missing some of the humanity and details of the smaller book. CLICK TO BUY

  • Walt Disney Entertainment: A Retrospective Look (Ron Logan) - this book is not so much printed as it is spiral-bound for special audiences when the author deems it necessary, but it details 20+ years in the theme park entertainment division, warts and all. Personally, I find it fascinating. CLICK FOR CONTACT INFO

  • Walt Disney World: Then, Now, and Forever (Bruce Gordon and Jeff Kurtti) - Bruce's last project before his untimely death, this one is no exception to the meticulous detail and fantastic layout characteristic of his work. Expect a mix of concept art, reality, and photos you can't take as a mere mortal all throughout this must-have volume. CLICK TO BUY

  • Walt Disney's Cinderella (Cynthia Rylant) - the conceit to this slim hardcover is that the images are all by Mary Blair, so there's a certain stylistic element put forward here. But the text is just the story, told in minimalist terms. This is a book for completists or diehard Blair fans only. CLICK TO BUY

  • Walt Disney's Imagineering Legends (Jeff Kurtti) - prolific author Kurtti does it again; this hardcover tome is hard to resists in the shelf of must-haves. He chronicles the designers of Disney theme parks (mostly Disneyland) by name, and includes details you haven't heard before. Half the photos are also new to print. A must-have for serious theme park historians. CLICK TO BUY

  • Walt Disney World Souvenir Box Set (anonymous) - these very slim softcovers are the "cheap" souvenir guides to WDW parks in 2008; one for each park (and a volume on "everything else" if you buy the box set) at a cheap price point. But the production values are high, and you definitely get your money's worth.

  • Welcome, Foolish Mortals: The Life and Voices of Paul Frees (Ben Ohmart) - this is my kind of book: an exegesis both exhaustive and exhausting on Disney voice talent Paul Frees. You'll come away with much more (too much?) about his life than the contributions to the Haunted Mansion. CLICK TO BUY

Theme Parks

There are a lot of theme park books, but fortunately there’s also a quick and easy rule of thumb to follow: anything Bruce Gordon was involved with will be gorgeous, expensive, and worth the price. Walt Disney World books are always well-written when they come from Jeff Kurtti. The essentials for me are:

a. Disneyland: The Nickel Tour (David Mumford, Bruce Gordon) CLICK TO BUY

b. Disneyland: The Inside Story (Randy Bright, Bruce Gordon) CLICK TO BUY

c. Designing Disney’s Theme Parks: Architecture of Reassurance (Marling) CLICK TO BUY

Company History

It is instructive, to say the least, to examine how the Disney Company got to where it is today. Only by understanding the past can we hope to comment intelligently on the present and the future:

a. Magic Kingdom (Steven Watts) CLICK TO BUY

b. Storming the Magic Kingdom (Taylor) CLICK TO BUY

c. Work in Progress (Michael Eisner/Stephen Schwartz) CLICK TO BUY

d. Disney War (James Stewart) CLICK TO BUY

e. Building a Company: Roy Disney and the Creation of an Entertainment Empire (Bob Thomas) CLICK TO BUY

Walt Disney Biography

There are far too many books about Walt Disney, with the vast majority of them saying nothing really new. A great many are written for children, and end up only in children’s libraries. You may safely skip all of them. You might also consider skipping Eliot’s accusatory and largely discounted book (I include it in this list only for its infamy: everyone reads it just to deride it):

a. Man Behind the Magic (Katharine and Richard Greene) CLICK TO BUY

b. Walt Disney: American Original (Bob Thomas) CLICK TO BUY

c. Hollywood’s Dark Prince (Marc Eliot) CLICK TO BUY

d. Walt Disney’s Missouri (Burnes) CLICK TO BUY

e. Walt Disney: Triumph of the American Imagination (Neal Gabler) CLICK TO BUY

The Disney Bookshelf Checklist

Animator (Auto)Biography

This entire category might seem to be something only for diehard collectors, but if you followed this intuition you’d be depriving yourself of real insight into Disney movies and parks. These are the guys who make the magic, so knowing about them helps you to truly appreciate their work:

a. Backstage with Walt (Charles Snows) CLICK TO BUY

b. Brush with Disney (David Mumford, Bruce Gordon) CLICK TO BUY

c. One of Walt’s Boy’s (Harry Tytle) – note: out of print, hard to find CLICK TO BUY

d. Walt Disney’s Nine Old Men (Canemaker) CLICK TO BUY

e. Hand Behind the Mouse (Iwerks) CLICK TO BUY

f. Walt Disney and Assorted Characters (Jack Kinney) CLICK TO BUY

g. Art and Flair of Mary Blair (John Canemaker) CLICK TO BUY

Feature Animation

Clearly, if you have favorite Disney movies, you should find the "Art of" books for those films first. They began with Little Mermaid (small format, and not that informative) and hit their stride with Aladdin (books on films created earlier than 1989 were done retrospectively in the 1990s). Recent years have seen variations on the traditional "Art of" books so the public doesn’t get bored (i.e., the books with unusual content on Lilo and Stitch, Treasure Planet), but with mixed results in my opinion. All things being otherwise equal, my list of essentials includes:

a. Illusion of Life (Johnson) CLICK TO BUY

b. Disney Studio Story (Richard Holliss) CLICK TO BUY

c. Disney That Never Was (Charles Soloman) CLICK TO BUY

d. Art of the Lion King (Christopher Finch) – note: get the full-sized version CLICK TO BUY

e. Art of Walt Disney (Christopher Finch) – note: get the full-sized version CLICK TO BUY

f. Before the Animation Begins (John Canemaker) CLICK TO BUY

e. Paper Dreams (John Canemaker) CLICK TO BUY

f. Walt’s Time: The Sherman Brothers (David Mumford, Bruce Gordon) CLICK TO BUY

g. Alchemy of Animation (Don Hahn) CLICK TO BUY

Academic Disney (cultural/sociological)

The category many collectors have ignored, the academic books on Disney are not for everyone. It requires some experience with the verbosity and occasional pomposity of the ivory tower set to make it through these books with anything less than a grimace. For the initiated, of course, these readings of the cultural significance of Disney and its products are nothing short of revelatory:

a. From Mouse to Mermaid (Bell etc.) CLICK TO BUY

b. Deconstructing Disney (Eleanor Byrne, Martin McQuillan) CLICK TO BUY

c. Vinyl Leaves (Steven Fjellman) CLICK TO BUY

d. Tinker Belles and Evil Queens : The Walt Disney Company from the Inside Out (Sean Griffin) CLICK TO BUY

Kevin’s Disney Books

Kevin is the author of many books on Disney theme parks, including:

  • Mouse Trap: Memoir of a Disneyland Cast Member provides the first authentic glimpse of what it’s like to work at Disneyland.
  • The Walt Disney World Menu Book lists restaurants, their menus, and prices for entrees, all in one handy pocket-sized guide.
  • Tokyo Disney Made Easy is a travel guide to Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySeas, written to make the entire trip stress-free for non-speakers of Japanese.
  • Magic Quizdom offers an exhaustive trivia quiz on Disneyland park, with expansive paragraph-length answers that flesh out the fuller story on this place rich with details.
  • 101 Things You Never Knew About Disneyland is a list-oriented book that covers ground left intentionally unexposed in the trivia book, namely the tributes and homages around Disneyland, especially to past rides and attractions.
  • 101 Things You Never Knew About Walt Disney World follows the example of the Disneyland book, detailing tributes and homages in the four Disney World parks.

More information on the above books, along with ordering options are at this link. Kevin is currently working on other theme park related books, and expects the next one to be published soon.
